1. EnglishIn Lesson 1, we discussed audience awareness. As you move forward in our course, think about audience. Think about audience in all things that you do. If your coffee is not right at Starbucks, then think about the barista as your audience before you air your grievances. If you need to bring something up to your superior, consider how you are automatically aware of audience as you plan your strategy.

For this part of the discussion board, consider all of the different audiences you encounter throughout the day on a weekly basis. Who do you talk to and encounter? How do you change your approach with each audience? Do you speak differently to friends than you do to your children? If you must call an insurance company, do you speak differently to the agent on the phone than to your grandmother? Describe at least two interactions and how they are different from one another. You might want to include two interactions that describe your life situation, like where you work or live.

Part III: What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses when it comes to academic writing? What challenges do you anticipate in this course? What are you excited to learn or improve about yourself as a writer?

  • Respond to Matthew

 Good evening,

My name is Pamela Washington. I am currently located in Mobile, Alabama and I am a human resources manager. It is my goal to use the my experience combined with a higher degree in human resources management to serve as an asset assisting a company to reach its highest potential thru managing human capital.

We all have experienced a miscommunication at some point of our adult lives. Miscommunication may derive from several areas. One area of communication that we often overlook due to the ease of information transfer thru technology is tone. At times emails, text message and any other form of written communication are left to the perception of the reader. Because the perception of the reader is important to reception of the point you are attempting to convey, knowing your audience is a key part of effective communication.

I have a customer service background that has dealt with every aspect of payroll. Payroll can quickly become a sensitive subject to any employee. When errors occur, correcting the error timely and efficiently with an explanation catered to the understanding of the injured individual is imperative. For example, if you have an employee new to the workforce, aspects of social security and Medicare, 401k, disability programs may not be as appealing as it would to an older worker that is preparing for retirement. Adjusting your delivery to your audience and delivering the message in a is received can be challenging.

I anticipate this course to assist me to develop writing skills to convey the point I am wanting the reader to understand. Since I have been out of school for a length of time, I am anticipating essay writing in APA style to be a challenge. However, I am excited to use this course to set the tone and strengthen my skills for future classes.

  • Respond to Benjamin

Greetings fellow classmates,

My name is Benjamin Kiefer, and I am a proud father of four. For the past 19 years, I have worked in the North Metro Atlanta area as a firefighter and paramedic. In my current role, I interact with the community as well as the command staff daily. I am excited to develop and sharpen my communication and writing skills in this class. Throughout my career, I have always had a long-term goal to obtain a college degree. I am pursuing a degree in emergency management with plans to obtain a graduate degree to prepare myself for after I retire from the Fire Department.

While preparing for this initial post, I thought about the differences in audiences I encounter every day and how I adapt my approach, body language, and tone depending on the situation. It occurred to me that there is also a noted change in delivery when the audience is the same, but the situation is different. On an emergency scene, I may communicate in an autocratic and direct manner to my crew, but back at the station my delivery of the same information can be different.

My message of how to force entry into a residence can be delivered in multiple ways depending on the situation to the same audience.

3. Learning Strategies for Success

  • Got goals? A popular phrase on the Internet is that your goals do not care how you feel. Although this is a layman’s philosophy of life, it possesses some great truths. What do you think about this outlook? How do you handle situations when your goals seem to get the best of you?
  • Response to Kari

Hi everyone, my name is Kari, I currently live in Florida, I am not employed right now just focusing on school, and my future goals are to be able to live a healthy and stable life and be able to grow a family.

This phrase “Goals do not care how you feel” is very true to me because every goal you have in life will always knock you down in some way. There are many people that have easy goals like being able to get up and clean the house but even the simplest goals can be hard as well there are a lot of people that deal with mental illness or ADD or ADHD which can be hard. When I start reaching for a goal in my life like going to school is hard because I didn’t want to but I did it and it is hard because there are times where some of my assignments do not get the grade I wanted but I take that and learn from it and make sure the next is better than the last. I always try to move forward when a goal knocks me down, I don’t want it to get the best of me because if I let that happen I would never get to finish my goals in life.
