Annotated Bibliography
Introduction
An annotated bibliography is a list of sources along with a corresponding summary/evaluation of each source that is used for an essay/research project. Creating annotated bibliographies helps us understand our research and organize our thoughts.
Directions
Create an annotated bibliography with at least five sources. Find at least 5 reliable sources related to your research question, including at least one source that focuses on alternatives or arguments different from the one you plan to make. Each source should include the bibliographic information, a summary of the source, and an assessment of how you will use the source in your essay.
Of these 5 reliable sources
● 2 need to be peer-reviewed and/or scholarly article(use York Tech databases)
● 1 should be a popular article
● The last 2 sources can be either of the aforementioned
○ You also have the option of using government publications for the last 2 sources
Each source should include the bibliographic information, a summary of the source, and an assessment of how you will use the source in your essay. More specific instructions on the format and content of each entry are provided below.
The sources used in this annotated bibliography are the same as the sources you will use in your final essay. Note: You are free to use more than five sources in your final paper. The additional sources do not have to be from the YTC database and they do not need to be included in the annotated bibliography.
Each of the five individual entries should be formatted in the following way:
Bibliographic Information–also known as the works cited entry, these entries MUST follow MLA guidelines for correct documentation. All entries should be listed in alphabetical order.
Please note, the Summary/Assessment portion will all be in one paragraph. Please make sure the information flows smoothly.
Summary of Your Source—2-3 sentences. Who is the author, and why are they credible? What is this source about? What is the main idea? What are the topics covered? This should be an objective summary, meaning that you should not discuss your opinion of the article or the topic at all. You are simply summarizing what the author of the source says about the topic. Write the summary in your own words; do not use direct quotes.
Assessment—3-4 sentences. Why is this source useful? Identify at least one quote from the source that you will use in your essay. Use a signal phrase to introduce the quote. Follow the quote with an explain of why it matters for your point.
If you complete, the summary and assessment thoroughly, then you can use the language in your final essay.
MLA Format
Your essay should be properly formatted according to the most up-to-date MLA standards found in the supplement provided with your textbook. If you do not have access to that supplement, please follow the guidelines found at the Purdue OWL (Online Writing Lab)
Proper formatting includes the following criteria:
● MLA General Format
● In-text citations
● Works Cited page that follows all MLA guidelines
