Write a paper with a minimum of 1000 (1500 words max) words on a Western Medieval philosopher:
· Roscelin of Compiègne
For your chosen philosopher, do the following
· Briefly discuss that person’s history, but include the historical context, something happening during and around this person’s life that should have been influential.
· Discuss two or three philosophical theories or positions this person held you find interesting. Be sure to explain why you find these positions/theories interesting
· Finally, discuss the viability of the positions/theories today. Can it be that these theories are still capable of doing what the person intended or explain what the person intended.
Because this is a mix of exploratory and argumentative, the thesis must clearly reveal the outline of the paper and then the paper must follow that outline. For example:
Boethius lived over a hundred year after Augustine, but they both felt it was important to write about similar topics. Unlike Augustine, Boethius, in his time of greatest need, turned to philosophy for consolation. In what follows, I will first discuss Boethius’s life and untimely end at the hand of the Arian Christian, King Theodocius (“Boethius Consolation of Philosophy”). I will then examine his position on the difference between fortune and providence and how he attempts to reconcile free will with God’s foreknowledge as presented in his
Consolation of Philosophy. After exploring why I feel these positions are interesting, I will explore their viability today. Not to be a spoiler, but they both present more problems than answers.
