Section 1

Main Entry: Parts 1 (Option A OR B), 2, and 3

Part 1: For part 1, you will choose either Option A or Option B, depending on which subfield you choose.

OPTION A: If you lean toward/are interested in a subfield covered in this unit’s learning resources (clinical, counseling, neuro, I/O, school, forensic, and health psychology), share that insight with us – what draws you to this field? Briefly discuss your reaction to at least two of the learning resources contained in that section. What were your key takeaways?

OPTION B: If you lean more toward a subfield that was not covered (i.e., developmental/child psychology, cognitive psychology, experimental psychology, community psychology, sports psychology, etc.), name that subfield and provide us with a nutshell definition. Share a bit about what draws you to this field.  Find and share at least two resources related to this subfield. For example, you can share a link to a Youtube video of a professional in the field answering career-related questions, a link to a reputable website that defines the scope of the field, a link to a scholarly journal article that presents a current issue in that subfield, etc. Upon reviewing these resources, what are your key takeaways?

Part 2: What specific issue under this umbrella would you like to focus on and why? Example: If you chose neuropsychology maybe you have a particular interest in helping children recover from neurosurgery. If you are interested in I/O psychology, perhaps you are curious about the consequences of microaggressions on employee performance. If you are interested in sports psychology, maybe you want to determine the mental health issues that are most detrimental to athlete performance. What are some current or emerging trends in this domain that researchers and clinicians will want to keep abreast of?

Part 3: As we discussed in Unit 5, psychology concepts, research, and applications cross-fertilize and support pathways in other careers. For example, while I/O Psychology is traditionally associated with workplace psychology and human resources, it also intersects with fields like data science and machine learning. In a world increasingly reliant on data-driven decision-making, I-O psychologists are now finding themselves in high demand, applying their expertise to analyzing workplace data and enhancing business operations.

Consider what other fields your chosen subfield intersects with. Discuss one example and share a bit about how this intersection might evolve as we advance into the future. Offer a related resource (i.e. link, reference, etc.) for the curious among us to learn more!

Section 2

Main Entry: (Parts 1 (Option A or B), 2, and 3)Part 1: Choose Option A or B

OPTION A: In your Learning Resources, you were introduced to several helping professions that a background in psychology could pave the way to. Select one profession from the list that piques your interest. Share your choice and briefly explain why you find it intriguing; in doing so, highlight information from the career overview video/web article and/or the professional interview (i.e., “Day in the Life”) video you watched.

OPTION B: If there is a helping or allied health field that you are interested in that was not listed in this unit’s learning resources, describe why you are interested in the field, provide us with a brief career overview (that you write), offer a link to a “day-in-the-life”-style video/interview, and give any other resource you think might be useful in helping us understand the role and work of someone who does that job.

Part 2: Explore the professional association’s website for your chosen field. What valuable information did you find there? How could this association be a helpful resource as you consider pursuing this career path?

Part 3: How do you think a psychology background might be an advantage in this profession, and what additional training or specialization might be necessary to excel in this field?
