Discussion 1
Chapter 4 introduces the ethical schools of thought and the Masters of each school. Select one school of thought and its Master(s). (Do not choose Utilitarianism (Bentham) or the Ethics of Duty and Reason (Kant), as we will discuss those schools and Masters separately.)
· What are the theories of this school of thought? Who are the Masters?
· Why did you choose this school of thought and Master?
· What theories did you gain insight from and agree with in general?
· What challenges or criticisms do you have with this school?
· What is a modern example in which you believe this school’s theories might apply in the criminal justice field?

Assume that Police Officer (PO) Joe’s Department has a strict policy against providing gifts or other things of value to citizens they encounter on the street. PO Joe encounters a homeless mother and her infant during a routine patrol outside a grocery store, and the mother states that she does not have enough money to buy formula and diapers for her baby. The infant is crying and is in obvious need of both. PO Joe wishes to personally help her out by buying her the needed supplies until she finds a suitable place to stay but is aware he will also violate the department policy.
Discuss PO Joe’s ethical dilemma by applying the theories of both the Utilitarian School and the Ethics of Duty and Reason.
· How would you resolve this dilemma with both schools?
· How is the result similar or different, and why?
· What result do you agree with and why?
