There is a difference between cultural appreciation and appropriation. In this discussion, you’ll review an example of a creative work and share what sociocultural factors are present in the work and how these factors may have impacted the artist’s identity.
Discussing examples of cultural appropriation in the humanities often means investigating opinions and ideas different from your own. Remember to remain thoughtful and respectful toward your peers and instructor in your initial post as well as in your response discussion posts.
Create one initial post and respond to at least two of your classmates.
For your initial post, address the following:
Select a creative work that is questionable and/or controversial in terms of appropriation. Refer to the Module Guide for examples of cultural appropriation. You can also consider discussing examples that may have been considered cultural appropriation but actually aren’t. Address the following questions in your initial post:
- What example did you choose? How is the creative work you chose controversial in terms of cultural appropriation?
- Why do you believe that the work is or is not an example of cultural appropriation?
- What sociocultural factors are present in the example you chose?
- How might those sociocultural factors impact the artist’s identity?
