First I’d like to note, I absolutely loved the Crash Course Philosophy video as it kept my interest, it was easy to follow, and I learned what Utilitarianism is through the analogy of the Joker vs Batman; one of my old time favorites!

We’ve learned that Utilitarianism is based on the philosophy of everyone choosing actions that create happiness within themselves and therefore making it a hedonistic moral theory where we pursue happiness and work to avoid pain. However, in contrast to Egoism, Utilitarianism seeks to keep other’s regard in mind and heart to seek happiness for as many as possible from the lens of a disinterested spectator. The choices are made for the greatest good to the greatest number while thinking long-term and on a larger scale (CrashCourse, 2016).

Net Neutrality was a set of rules that came into effect in 2013 to keep the internet open, fully available to everyone equally, and prevent any blockage or slow-downs to some users or websites. However, it was repealed be the Federal Communications Commission vote as lobbyist argued that internet companies should not be micromanaged by the government (CNN, 2017). I personally have noticed how this has affected us due to the fact that our streaming services are now teared depending on how much we pay, Netflix doesn’t offer me the same movie choices as some of my counter parts due to the  fact that I pay the most affordable plan.

In my personal opinion, the FCC did not make an ethical decision following the Utilitarian Ethic Theory because while it assisted the companies that deliver the services it limits the access to various services to the USA population and limits any ability of start-ups to create new streaming services; not to mention the possibility of controlling what is being offered in regards to information and education due to the inability of having equal and open internet for all. It is clear that the choice made in this vote was not of a disinterested spectator, nor was it done for the greatest good to the greatest number of stakeholders.
