In the first module of this course, we addressed the question: Does God exist? We attempted to see how it is reasonable to believe in the existence of God. In sum, we addressed that God is, but not who God is. We’ve now covered enough ground to collect our thoughts on who Catholics understand God to be.
The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church notes that we “are able to speak about God.” How can this be? Because God has revealed himself to us through his creation and in his words and actions throughout history (most fully in Jesus Christ). Therefore, Catholics hold that one can speak about God and who he has revealed himself to be. However, we must “continually purify our language…realizing that we can never fully express the infinite mystery of God.” In other words, we can speak about what God has revealed, and nothing more. And, even what we can say does not capture the whole of God’s mystery.
Based upon the content of the first four modules of this course, how would you answer the question: Who is God? Carefully review the four modules with that question in mind. Using the template linked below, identify two descriptors for God per module and write a 1-2 sentences explaining what each means. You should have at least one cited source per entry. Be sure to cite your sources using footnotes.
