Introduction

Some plays are original stories that the playwright invents. But often, plays are adaptations of established stories. For example, The Lion King, a popular and long-running Broadway musical, is based on the animated film by the same title; many believe that the story is loosely based on the Shakespeare classic Hamlet. There are lots of examples of this phenomenon, but the point is that just about anything could be possible inspiration for a play: a novel, a song, a short story, the life of an actual person, true historical events, folk tales, fairy tales, movies, television shows, etc., etc., etc.

The Assignment

For this discussion forum, put yourself in the place of a playwright and think of something you think might be good inspiration for an original stage play: a book you’ve read, a movie you’ve seen, a real person whose life is intriguing, etc. Think of how that might play out onstage and how, logistically, it might be pulled off.

In 150 words or more, respond to the following questions:

· What original source do you think would make a good idea for a live stage play?

· What is it about that source that you think would make it successful?

· What are some of the specific moments you would include in the play, if you were to write it?

· What might make the play challenging to present live onstage (i.e. is there a visual effect that would be important to include)?

· What would be the title of your play?
