The physicians at ABC Clinics decided to implement a new EHR. This was their first EHR and they are excited to take this step. The physicians decided that the fastest way to implement the EHR was to have two-three physicians select the information and then have the information technology staff implement it using the standard settings without input from other users. They decided to utilize the straight turnover strategy. The physicians were shocked at the number of problems that they encountered on the first day of go-live. Some of these issues were as follows:
· The users did not know how to use the information system
· Some fields were required when they should not be
· Some functionalities did not work
· Users had to go to multiple screens to enter demographic and other basic data
The physicians had no choice but to go back to the paper and work to eliminate the issues.
Focus on answering these questions:
1. Identify issues with the implementation.
2. Did the physicians make the right decision in going back to paper? Justify your choice based on your comprehension of the “system implementation” (400-word count); give examples that highlight key points from System Implementation.
Please note the steps of System Implementation:
1. Site preparation
2. User Preparation
3. Installing hardware and software
4. Programming and customization
5. User configuration and settings
6. User interface design
7. Reengineering process
8. Policy and procedure development and documentation
9. Testing plan
10. Training
11. Conversion
12. Go-Live
