networking

Overview: Networking is an essential skill for professional development, and building a strong network takes time and strategic effort. For this assignment, you will create a detailed, personalized networking plan for the next 6 months. This plan will outline how you intend to connect with professionals in your field, grow and maintain those relationships, and leverage digital platforms to expand your network. By the end of this assignment, you should have a clear roadmap for networking that aligns with your career goals.
Objective: To develop a strategic networking plan that outlines specific steps to grow and maintain professional relationships over the next 6 months. This plan should consider various online platforms, target audiences, and networking strategies.

Detailed Instructions:
1    Identify Your Networking Goals (2-3 goals): Start by identifying your main goals for networking over the next 6 months. What are you hoping to achieve through networking? Your goals should be specific and aligned with your professional aspirations.
    ◦    Examples:

“Connect with at least 5 professionals in the sports medicine field to learn more about career opportunities.”

“Develop a relationship with a mentor who can guide me in applying for graduate school.”

“Expand my LinkedIn connections by 10%, focusing on professionals in the exercise science industry.”

2    Guidelines for this section:
    ◦    Make sure your goals are specific (not just “I want to meet people”), measurable (how many new connections or types of interactions you aim for), and realistic for the next 6 months.
    ◦    Reflect on your long-term career plans to set goals that will help you get there.

3    Targeted Networking Strategies (How will you connect?): In this section, you will outline how you plan to achieve each of your networking goals. Think about where your industry professionals spend their time online (LinkedIn, Twitter, industry webinars, etc.) and what actions you will take to initiate contact. Provide specific steps and timelines for reaching out to new contacts.
    ◦    Examples:

“I will attend at least two online webinars hosted by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and actively participate in the chat to engage with industry experts.”

“I will send a LinkedIn message to three professionals in sports nutrition whom I follow, asking for advice on entering the field.”

“I will participate in bi-weekly Twitter chats on exercise science using #ExSciChat to engage with peers and professionals.”

    4    Guidelines for this section:
    ◦    Be specific about the platforms and methods you will use (LinkedIn messages, virtual conferences, direct emails, Twitter discussions, etc.).
    ◦    Include a timeline or schedule for each strategy (e.g., “by the end of Month 2, I will have attended one online event”).

5    Maintaining Connections (How will you stay engaged?): Networking doesn’t end after the first interaction. In this section, explain how you plan to nurture and maintain the relationships you’ve started. What will you do to keep these connections strong and beneficial over time?
    ◦    Examples:

“I will follow up with my new LinkedIn connections by sending a message within 2 weeks of our initial contact, thanking them for any advice and providing an update on my progress.”

“I will create a reminder to check in with my mentor every month to discuss updates and ask for guidance.”

“I will engage with my network by liking, sharing, and commenting on posts related to research in kinesiology at least once a week.”

6    Guidelines for this section:
    ◦    Provide concrete strategies for sustaining engagement. This could be through email follow-ups, commenting on social media posts, or scheduling regular check-ins.
    ◦    Emphasize the importance of mutual benefit in networking—find ways to contribute to the relationship (sharing relevant articles, offering to help with a project, etc.).

7    Online Platforms and Tools (What platforms will you use?): Identify the online platforms that you will primarily use for networking and explain why these platforms are best suited to your goals. You should also briefly describe any additional tools you plan to use to support your efforts (e.g., email, professional networking apps, etc.).
    ◦    Examples:

“I will primarily use LinkedIn to connect with exercise science professionals and join industry groups to participate in relevant discussions.”

“I will use Twitter to engage in live chats on fitness and exercise science trends, as it is a platform where professionals in my field frequently share insights.”

“I will use Google Calendar to set reminders for following up with new connections and keeping track of virtual events.”

8    Guidelines for this section:
    ◦    Choose platforms that align with your field and goals. For example, LinkedIn may be more useful for finding mentors, while Twitter might be ideal for participating in real-time discussions with industry experts.
    ◦    Be specific about how you will use each platform (e.g., joining LinkedIn groups, attending webinars, or posting content).

9    Networking Challenges and Solutions (Anticipate difficulties and how to overcome them): Networking can present challenges, especially in an online environment. Think about potential obstacles you may face (e.g., lack of responses, difficulties in finding relevant contacts) and how you plan to overcome them.
    ◦    Examples:

“I anticipate it may be challenging to get responses from busy professionals. To overcome this, I will craft concise and polite messages that clearly state my purpose and express gratitude for their time.”

“I may struggle to find virtual events relevant to my niche. I will set up Google alerts for keywords related to sports medicine conferences and regularly check event platforms like Eventbrite.”

    10    Guidelines for this section:
    ◦    Be realistic and anticipate common networking issues, such as low response rates or difficulty maintaining connections.
    ◦    Outline specific strategies you will use to overcome these obstacles, like improving your communication style or expanding your search for events and contacts.

11    Reflection (How does this align with your future career goals?): Finally, reflect on how this networking plan aligns with your broader career aspirations. How will the connections you aim to make support your career journey? What do you hope to achieve by the end of the 6-month period?
    ◦    Examples:

“By the end of this 6-month period, I hope to have established at least two strong connections with professionals in sports nutrition who can offer career advice and mentorship as I apply to graduate school.”

“Through this plan, I aim to gain exposure to current research trends in kinesiology, which will help me tailor my career path toward a research assistant position after graduation.”

    12    Guidelines for this section:
    ◦    This is your opportunity to tie the networking planback to your overall career goals. Think long-term about how these connections will help you achieve your aspirations.

Submission Format:
Your networking plan should be submitted as a written discussion board post, with clear headings for each section:

•    Networking Goals
    •    Targeted Networking Strategies
    •    Maintaining Connections
    •    Online Platforms and Tools
    •    Networking Challenges and Solutions
    •    Reflection
Your plan should be at least 200 words, well-organized, and professionally written. Ensure you proofread for clarity and conciseness.

Assessment Criteria:
Your submission will be graded based on the following:
    •    Clarity and Specificity: Have you provided detailed, specific goals and strategies?
    •    Realism and Feasibility: Are your goals and strategies realistic and achievable within the 6-month period?
    •    Depth of Reflection: Have you thoughtfully reflected on the challenges and how this plan aligns with your career goals?
    •    Engagement with Peers: After submission, you must review one peer’s plan and provide constructive feedback on how they could improve or expand their strategies.

Brief Example to Get You Started:
Goal: Connect with at least 5 professionals in the field of physical therapy. Strategy: I will use LinkedIn to search for physical therapists working in sports rehab clinics. I will send personalized connection requests with a brief message explaining my interest in the field and asking for career advice. Maintaining Connections: I will follow up with each professional within 2 weeks by sharing an interesting article or asking a question based on their advice. Platform: LinkedIn will be my primary platform for connecting and maintaining relationships. Challenge: I anticipate that some professionals may not respond, so I will send polite follow-ups and broaden my search to include more professionals across related fields.
