Overview:

In this assignment you will analyze an episode of a popular and recent episode of a drama or sitcom. Prepare a written response to the prompt below using a word processor. Please save your file in .doc or .docx format. Your response should be complete, and your final document should be a minimum of two (2) pages in length, double spaced, and should comply with APA writing requirements.

Instructions:

Complete the following for your submission:

1. Choose a drama or comedy show which aired within the past 3 years.

2. Watch (the full episode) one of the three most recent episodes available of the show.

3. The show can be from your local television station, free on-line, or available through any of the premium channels such as Netflix, Hulu, etc.

4. Provide the following information:

a. Name of the program.

b. Title of the episode.

c. Original air date if you can get it
  

5. Provide an overall summary of the episode in five (5) sentences or less (the focus for this assignment should be on sociological analysis and not on the summary).

6. Analyze how the interaction between the characters, the ways in which the characters are portrayed, and instances of prejudice or discrimination that are exemplified in the episode according to the following (required):

a. Describe the family structure and roles of the characters.

b. Racial/ethnic diversity.  Who is represented, and who isn’t? How are they represented and how does society view them? Please describe interactions and how they promote or hinder racial tensions. Give specific examples to support this from the textbook. 

c. Sexuality and gender identity. Who is represented? Heterosexual individuals? LGBTQ individuals? Transgender individuals? Is sexuality even discussed, apparent, or is it assumed? Are people represented in stereotypical ways according to their sexuality or gender identity? Give specific examples to support this from the textbook.

7. In addition to the three required topics, choose one (1) of the following two (2) prompts (a or b) to discuss in your paper:

a. Social class and social stratification.

· What social classes were represented? 

· How is class represented overall?

· Give specific examples to support this from the textbook.

b. Age prejudice and discrimination.

· What age ranges are represented, and how are they represented?

· Is discrimination open, or is it subtle in nature?

· Give specific examples to support this from the textbook.

8. Write a brief conclusion/summary of what you learned while completing this assignment.

9. Your paper should be a minimum of two (2) pages in length, double-spaced.
