Many discussions in a school counselor’s office involve a student’s home life, as it can and does impact academic performance. Examine the ethical and legal challenges for school counselors to discuss students’ home life situations with other collaborators, such as staff, administrators, and teachers. These collaborators may not understand how social and emotional difficulties impact students’ academic work. Create a dialogue with a teacher who has referred a student for behavioral problems in the classroom. Advise them on responding without giving them the background information they may want to make these changes. Note in your discussion how teaching collaborators about your role as part of a prevention program may assist them in understanding this.
