help with outline

The basic outline

Example of how the paper should look and what should be discuss in each paragraph.

The book is called Lord of the Flies by William Golding (Afterward by Lois Lowry)

I need a written paper and an outline.

I. BASIC SAMPLE OUTLINE: Paragraph 1 – Introduction

·  Hook In every story of chaos or crisis, there’s always someone who rises to lead not because they’re the strongest, but because they refuse to give up. This is the case with Superman aka Clark Kent and Ralph from the novel
Lord of the Flies. Each of these characters are faced with incredible adversity, and they have to dedicate themselves to fix issues within their society, which is the definition of a hero.

· Thesis – Superman and Ralph are heroes conveying hope and fairness through their actions, while Superman displays heroism through direct action Ralph upholds the good, he wants to achieve.

II. Paragraph 2 – Topic Sentence about Similarity 1 (E.g.: Discuss how Harry Potter and Beowulf are both brave.  Give examples from the text that support brave actions and/or words.)  Format: One way in which H. P. and B. are
brave is when H.P. does this (specific action) and B. does this (specific action).

Hopeful Topic- Both Superman and Ralph are hopeful leaders who believe in a better future, while Superman inspires others with his commitment to justice, Ralph keeps the signal fire going in hopes of rescue even when others begin to give up.

·  “Quote from the novel” (cite) When Ralph, desperate to keep hope alive, tells the other boys, “We’ve got to make smoke up there or die!” (Golding 58), he is urging them to maintain the signal fire, so they have a chance at rescue, highlighting the importance of having someone to keep the voice of hope to get them rescued

L1 When Ralph says, “We’ve got to make smoke up there or die!” he is telling the boys to keep the fire going because it’s their only chance to be rescued. This shows how important it is to have hope and stay focused on being saved.

L2   Ralph’s words show that he is trying to keep everyone’s spirits up and remind them that the fire is their connection to the outside world. His urgency makes it clear that without the fire, they have no chance of survival.

L3 Golding uses Ralph’s plea to show how hope is important when times are tough. It shows how people rely on hope to get through hard situations, and having someone like Ralph keep that hope alive is crucial for survival.

· Example OR “Quote from the movie” (
Speed Racer 00:02:15-00:02:35). Lois Lane listens, sensing the genuine conflict within him. She recognizes that Clark isn’t seeking fame or glory, but instead is driven by a deep need to do what’s right. This moment marks pivotal turning point in Clark’s journey, as he begins to embrace his role, not as a hero in the traditional sense, but as someone who has the power to make a real difference even if he’s unsure how the world will accept him.

· L1 When Lois notices Clark’s inner struggle and realizes he wants to do what’s right, not for fame but because he truly cares, it shows an important moment where he starts to accept his purpose.

L2 This moment uses character development to show Clark’s shift from being unsure of himself to realizing that real heroism is about helping others, even without recognition.

L3 By showing this emotional turning point, the filmmakers highlight the theme that true heroes are defined by their actions and intentions, not by how the world sees them, creating a hopeful tone about doing what’s right no matter the cost.

· Paragraph 3 – Topic Sentence about Similarity 2 (E.g.: Discuss how Harry Potter and Beowulf are both loyal.

 FAIRNESS Topic-
Both Ralph and Superman show fairness by treating others as equals and respecting their voices.

Give examples from the text that support loyal actions and/or words.)   Quote from the novel” (cite) –  While discussing control and order among the group, Ralph demonstrates fairness when he tells the boys,
“I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he’s speaking… and he won’t be interrupted. Except by me” (Golding 33), ensuring that everyone has an equal opportunity to voice their opinions during their meetings.

L1 Ralph tries to keep things fair by using the conch to make sure everyone gets a turn to speak, showing he wants to include everyone and keep order during the meeting

L2 Golding uses the conch as a symbol of fairness and order, and through Ralph’s actions, we see that he values respect and teamwork even when others start to ignore the rules.

L3 By showing Ralph trying to lead with fairness, Golding teaches the theme that rules and respect are important for keeping peace and that without them, things can quickly fall apart.

· Example OR “Quote from the movie” (cite). (
Speed Racer 00:02:15-00:02:35)
When confronted by the U.S. military, Superman chooses to surrender, he tells Lois Lane,
“I’m surrendering to mankind. There’s a difference,” showing that his decision is not out of fear but a deliberate effort to treat humans as equals and act fairly.

L1 When Superman says,
“I’m surrendering to mankind. There’s a difference,” he shows that he is not giving up out of fear, but instead choosing to respect and trust humans by treating them as equals.

L2 This quote shows Superman’s character as someone who uses his power responsibly, and it highlights the theme of fairness and trust through dialogue that reveals his thoughtful, peaceful nature.

L3 By showing Superman making a respectful choice even when he is more powerful, the film teaches that real strength comes from humility and fairness, and it builds a hopeful tone about unity between people and outsiders.

III. Paragraph 4 – Topic Sentence about Differences (E.g.: Seeking fame/glory versus seeking justice etc.  Give examples from the text that show the difference in Beowulf and Harry Potters intentions.  Beowulf comes to the Danes to defeat Grendel and win fame, glory, treasure etc. while Harry Potter seeks to defeat Voldemort to save the world… etc.) –  Superman and Ralph both convey fairness but demonstrate it in different ways, Superman fights for everyone and does what’s right for the entire world, while Ralph tries to be fair with the boys on the island through sharing and advocation even though it gets harder as things start to fall apart.

·  Quote from the novel” (cite).    fairness “The first thing we ought to do is to call a meeting.”  (Golding 51)     (must come from the thesis)

L1 Ralph’s statement,
“The first thing we ought to do is to call a meeting,” shows his immediate instinct to organize the group and involve everyone in making decisions. The word “ought” suggests a sense of duty or fairness in including all voices. This moment is important because it sets the tone for Ralph’s leadership style—structured and democratic.

L2 This use of dialogue and word choice demonstrates Ralph’s commitment to fairness by wanting to create a system where all boys are heard. The word “meeting” symbolizes equality and order, in contrast to chaos. It reveals Ralph’s belief in shared responsibility and his effort to maintain civility despite their wild surroundings. His fairness becomes a key part of his character and a source of tension as the group begins to fall apart.

L3 Golding uses Ralph’s fair-minded approach early in the novel to develop the theme of civilization vs. savagery. Ralph’s attempt to include everyone reflects a human desire for structure and justice, especially in uncertain times. However, the failure of these meetings over time suggests that fairness and democracy are fragile when confronted with fear, power struggles, and the darker sides of human nature.

·  Example OR “Quote from the movie” (cite). – Superman decides to confront General Zod to protect Earth from annihilation.

L1 Superman chooses to confront General Zod in order to save Earth, showing his willingness to act when innocent lives are at stake.

L2 This moment reveals Superman’s internal conflict and moral strength, using the clash with Zod to highlight the deeper struggle between power used for protection versus domination.

L3 Through this confrontation, the author explores the universal theme that true heroism lies in self-sacrifice and moral responsibility, emphasizing that real strength is defined by compassion and choice.

· Paragraph 5 –Conclusion.

·  RE-worded Thesis – Superman and Ralph both embody heroism by promoting hope and justice through their actions; while Superman demonstrates heroism through decisive action, Ralph seeks to uphold and achieve the greater good.  Add specifics (see example below).
