MR. KHALED BIN AYED AL ASIRI
CEO – NAJRAN HEALTH CLUSTER &
CHAIRMAN – GOVERNING BOARD

King Khalid Hospital in Najran is of great importance
to the region, representing an extraordinary qualitative
leap in the history of Najran Health since its opening
on 25/6/1404 AH. The hospital has maintained its
leadership from its inception to the present day, as the
only referral hospital in the region offering a variety
of services and specialties. It is also the largest in
terms of its operational and bed capacity, which
actually amounts to approximately 300 beds. Najran
Health has relied on King Khalid Hospital for its
capabilities to introduce new healthcare technologies
to the region, both in the areas of diagnostic and
therapeutic medical services and non-medical services
such as information systems and the security and

safety of health facilities. It has also relied on the
hospital to implement and keep up-to-date with the
policies of the Ministry of Health, serving as a model
hospital for other hospitals in the region.
Establishment:
The hospital was opened on 25/6/1404 AH (June 25,
1404 AH) during the reign of King Fahd, may God
have mercy on him. It had a capacity of 200 beds on
an area of 450 acres. During the first five years, a
medical team from Germany, including doctors from
all specialties and nursing staff, was employed.
Nurses from South Korea were also contracted to
cover the shortage in nursing staff. This marked a

bright start for the hospital, which later established a
systematic approach.
Initially, the hospital’s operation relied on centralized
contracts from the Ministry, in addition to operating
contracts with operating and maintenance companies.
This was until the Ministry discontinued medical
operations based on maintenance and operation
contracts. Recently, a self-employment program was
introduced to contract with medical, technical, and
administrative personnel through the Najran Health
Operations Committee.
Development and Modernization:
The advancement of King Khalid Hospital for
evaluation and accreditation with national and
international quality certification coincided with a
comprehensive plan for development and
modernization across all aspects of the hospital:
administrative, medical, paramedical, and nonmedical technical departments. This gave this
venerable, historic, and gigantic hospital a modern
and contemporary spirit, transforming it into a
civilized medical edifice accredited with national and
international quality standards.

Emergency Department:
The first department to be developed, it has received
significant support since its opening in 1431 AH
(1431 AH), transforming it into a mini-hospital with a
capacity of 30 beds for all emergency and critical
services, with a strict triage system for handling such
cases. The department has been equipped with a
sufficient number of modern, fully equipped
ambulances, in addition to a landing pad for air
ambulances. It is also equipped with a modern
radiology system, high-resolution screens, an MRI
unit, and a small emergency operating room.
Intensive Care Unit:
His Royal Highness Prince Mishaal bin Abdullah,
Governor of Najran Region, inaugurated the
expansion of the intensive care unit at King Khalid
Hospital in Najran on 28/6/1430 AH (June 28, 2019).
This expansion included equipping it with the latest
equipment and increasing its bed capacity to
accommodate more than 38 patients, up from its
previous capacity of only nine. In addition, the unit is
connected via video conferencing between the
hospital’s intensive care consultants and the
consultants at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in

Riyadh. King Khalid Hospital is second among
hospitals in the Kingdom to implement this service.
Patients admitted to the intensive care unit are cared
for by a fully integrated medical team working around
the clock to ensure proper monitoring and provision
of the necessary healthcare at all stages of their care.
It is medically known that the intensive care unit only
receives critical cases requiring intensive medical
care, which King Khalid Hospital in Najran provides
at the highest medical standards.
The development of this department did not stop
immediately after its opening; it was later reinforced
with modern systems for monitoring and monitoring
intensive care beds and touchscreen controls. The
number of isolation rooms in the department was also
increased to four, providing privacy.
Diagnostic Endoscopy and Gastrointestinal
Endoscopy Department:
This department has been developed and modernized
by allocating a new location separate from the old
operating rooms. It was then equipped with a modern
staff of diagnostic and surgical gastrointestinal
endoscopes and sterilization rooms. This has enabled
the performance of thousands of diagnostic
gastrointestinal endoscopies, as well as thousands of

laparoscopic cholecystectomy and appendectomy
surgeries. This has significantly reduced patient
suffering, treatment time, and the potential
complications that can occur after similar procedures
without laparoscopy. This has also relieved thousands
of patients in the region from the hassle of traveling to
advanced centers in the Kingdom and abroad.
The center began trial operations at the beginning of
Jumada al-Ula 1433 AH (1973 A.H.) and now
receives diabetes follow-up cases through outpatient
clinics daily. The center offers specialized services for
diabetes treatment and follow-up, including a
specialized diabetes laboratory for measuring blood
sugar curves and diagnosing diabetes type, as well as
conducting stimulation tests to determine the patient’s
response to treatment and measuring blood insulin
levels. The center also includes a unit for treating
insulin-dependent diabetes, which often affects young
people. A strategic plan is underway to develop the
center’s services to keep pace with the latest global
diabetes treatment technologies, God willing.
Dental Center
The number of clinics has increased from nine to 12,
offering comprehensive dental services at the third
level. The center receives all patients referred from

dental clinics in hospitals and internal and external
health centers in the region. The center consists of: the
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, the
Conservative and Root Canal Treatment Department,
the Removable Prosthodontics Department, the Fixed
Prosthodontics Department, the Orthodontics
Department, the Oral and Gum Diseases Department,
and the Pediatric Dentistry Department. The center
receives emergency cases 24 hours a day, with the
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department
participating in interventions to treat all cases of
facial, jaw, and temporomandibular joint fractures and
to stop the resulting bleeding.
In 1431 AH (1999), the Dental Center was expanded,
utilizing the land area bordering it on the eastern side
to create a fully integrated dental laboratory staffed by
15 distinguished national technicians. This expansion
also included the creation of a dedicated training hall
and a meeting room where a weekly scientific
symposium is held, bringing together all the center’s
doctors and technicians, to discuss all new
developments related to the work.
It is worth noting that the center currently has 18
doctors, including 7 Saudi doctors, in addition to 11
technicians from various technical categories.
Ophthalmology Center

The Ophthalmology Center is one of the hospital’s
surgical departments. It began operating since the
hospital’s opening in 1404 AH (1994 CE). It is the
only specialized center covering the Najran region.
The center includes specialized clinics, examination
rooms, and vision measurement. Each clinic is
equipped with a fully equipped examination unit,
including a light microscope, slit lamp, tonometer,
and contact lenses. Specialized clinics have also been
opened for retina, glaucoma, strabismus, ophthalmic
aesthetics, and ophthalmic neurology. The department
also features an Argon laser device for treating
diabetic retinopathy, an ophthalmic ultrasound
machine, a fundus photography machine, and a Yag
laser device for treating glaucoma. Approximately 80
to 100 patients visit the clinic daily. The center also
includes a minor operating room and an emergency
room. Cataract surgery is performed using
phacoemulsification and incision techniques, as well
as glaucoma, dacryocystorhinostomy, and strabismus
surgeries of all types, along with all types of minor
surgeries. The department performs between 70 and
90 surgeries per month, with most of them performed
as same-day surgeries.
Sterilization Department

This department has been developed by updating
sterilization equipment to the latest international
technologies, in accordance with the
recommendations of the Joint Commission
International for Quality.
Replacement of the Hospital’s Old Blood Bank
The hospital’s old blood bank has been replaced with
a modern one equipped with the latest blood donation
units and blood storage devices (such as modern
digital refrigerators) and separate components.
Modern policies have been established for the blood
bank to avoid the slightest human error, to preserve
patient safety and the quality of services provided in
this department.
This department has also been linked to the Ministry
of Health’s public network of blood banks across the
Kingdom to integrate their work.
Radiology Department
The hospital’s radiology department has been
developed with a modern system for storing
radiological images and reports on dedicated
computer servers and a network across all hospital

departments. This enables the treating physician to
view, study, and report on them without the need for
images to be manually transferred from one place to
another and without the need for a light box on which
the radiological images were placed for reading. The
department has been equipped with a number of
modern devices that were not available before, such as
a 3D CT scan, a 4D CT scan, a 4D color imaging
device, an arterial catheterization device, an
interventional radiology device, a mammography and
biopsy device, a high-resolution digital imaging
device, and a bone density device. The department
consists of a catheterization and interventional
radiology room, 3 CT scan rooms, 2 MRI rooms, 3
ultrasound and arterial imaging rooms, and 3 other
mobile devices for emergencies and intensive care.
Work is currently underway to establish a nuclear
medicine center and a center for early detection of
breast cancer, in addition to an MRI machine for heart
and vascular diseases.
The Radiology Department is one of the largest and
most modern radiology departments in the Kingdom.
At the human resources level, four consultants were
hired, including a nuclear radiology consultant and an

interventional radiology consultant. This helped
develop and improve the work environment, as well
as opening the door to training for radiology
specialists and the beginning of obtaining Saudi and
Arab fellowships in radiology from the hospital.
Key Achievements
Accredited by the Saudi Central Board for
Accreditation of Healthcare Institutions (CBAHI),
achieving fifth place in the Kingdom.
Achieving first place in same-day surgery, accounting
for 83% of all surgeries at the hospital across the
Kingdom for the third consecutive year.
Achieving first place among the Kingdom’s hospitals
in patient rights and relations, becoming an accredited
training center by the Ministry and representing the
Ministry at international conferences, citing our
expertise in this field.
One of the first hospitals in the Kingdom to
implement the world’s most advanced digital
operating system, which contributes to the
performance of surgical procedures with extreme
precision. Nine new operating rooms are considered
the best in the Middle East. The hospital is considered

one of the best hospitals in the Kingdom, with 30
fully equipped intensive care beds, compared to the
overall number of hospital beds. The hospital has
never faced a shortage of beds for critical and
emergency cases in intensive care.
The hospital has obtained international accreditation
from the Joint Commission International (JCI) as the
first government hospital in the southern region.
The hospital has been recognized by the Saudi
Commission for Health Specialties as a training and
teaching hospital.
The hospital has launched fellowship and doctoral
programs in the specialties of general surgery,
orthopedics, internal medicine, and radiology
technology.
Many rare surgeries have been performed, for the first
time in the region’s history, particularly on the spine,
brain, nerves, and advanced laparoscopic surgeries.
Numerous doctors and consultants have been
recruited, both on permanent contracts and as visiting
physicians. The hospital now boasts consultants in all
major and subspecialties.
The cardiac disease and surgery center has been
operational, and diagnostic and therapeutic
catheterization procedures have begun for the first

time in the history of the Najran region, thus ending
the suffering of heart patients in the region. The
hospital also performed the first open-heart surgery in
the southern sectors of the Ministry of Health in the
Kingdom. The hospital achieved excellence in the
hormone and tumor markers program at the level of
laboratories in the Kingdom.
Burns and Plastic Surgery Unit:
The hospital’s burns unit has been developed by
increasing the number of intensive care beds for burns
from 4 to 8, and by fully equipping the rooms with
isolation systems and intensive care equipment.
Plastic surgery has also been developed to include
procedures using the mesh skin grafting system.
Grafting operations have been performed on hundreds
of patients, helping most of them recover and leave
the hospital for follow-up and care in the outpatient
clinic.
Digital Operating Room Department
The digital operating room project at King Khalid
Hospital in Najran, considered the most modern in the
Middle East, consists of nine operating rooms in a
separate building. It aims to take advantage of the
rapid and significant developments in digital
technology that enable doctors to perform operations
on patients with extreme precision. The newly

developed digital operating room department in
Najran is comparable to its counterparts in Western
countries. It consists of nine digital operating rooms
equipped with the latest equipment and technologies,
as well as the most advanced medical technologies
globally. This allows the surgical team and anesthesia
staff to control all equipment inside these rooms via
touch screens and voice recognition. It also allows
them to communicate with hospital departments when
needed via a voice system without the need to use
telephones or mobile devices, thus avoiding touching
unsterile materials during surgery. It also includes an
advanced video system with high-resolution cameras
inside the rooms that record surgical procedures,
allowing them to be viewed live. This allows remote
consultants in other medical centers in the medical
cities to participate in decision-making during
operations when necessary. New capabilities that were
not previously available have also been added, such as
providing High-resolution surgical microscopes are
used to perform the most delicate and complex
surgical procedures, including ophthalmic and
neurosurgery microscopes, optical microscopes for
ENT surgeries, as well as surgical endoscopies and
urology endoscopes. The operating department is also
equipped with a 24-hour electricity unit to ensure the
department is unaffected by power outages, especially

in emergency situations. The digital operating rooms
are attached to 12-bed recovery rooms equipped with
all modern equipment.
This modern digital operating room is staffed by a
qualified national medical team trained in Germany
on how to operate these rooms with precision,
handling all cases around the clock and under all
circumstances. This is part of the successful
international cooperation between Najran Health,
represented by King Khalid Hospital, and Western
countries.
Prince Sultan Cardiac Center
A new building has been added to the Prince Sultan
Cardiac Center to meet the region’s need for
diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac catheterization
services and coronary artery stenting. As part of the
accelerated steps to develop health services in the
Najran region, and the lack of specialized medical
centers the region has suffered from in recent years,
King Khalid Hospital in Najran was recently able to
end the suffering of heart patients in the region
through catheterization and open-heart surgeries. The
center began operating in the middle of Dhu al-Qi’dah
1433 AH. The Prince Sultan Center for Cardiac
Diseases and Surgery at King Khalid Hospital in the
region was able to perform numerous diagnostic and

therapeutic catheterizations, all of which were
crowned with success. It also performed the first
open-heart surgery in the southern sectors of the
Ministry of Health in the Kingdom with complete
efficiency and success. The center includes 60
inpatient beds in both male and female sections. It is
equipped with numerous advanced medical devices,
utilizing the best international technologies in this
field. It also includes two laboratories for therapeutic
and diagnostic cardiac catheterization procedures, and
three open-heart surgery rooms equipped with a highlevel digital system.
Surgical procedures are recorded and transmitted via
closed-circuit television and a private electronic
network, enabling remote monitoring of operations for
educational and advisory purposes. The operating unit
also contains three recovery beds equipped with
patient monitoring devices, an advanced anesthesia
and artificial lung system, and the latest surgical
instruments. The operating room is also connected to
an electronic archiving system to assist surgeons in
reviewing X-rays and surgical images inside the
center. The center’s catheterization operating room is
the most modern of its kind, enabling doctors to
accurately diagnose and treat heart diseases. It
includes the most advanced device in the Middle East

for coronary artery disease examination in less than 3
seconds, providing high-resolution accuracy and
reducing time. The center has contributed to treating
900 patients annually who are referred outside the
region for catheterization procedures. The center has
also successfully performed the first open-heart
surgery in the region.
Diabetes Disease and Treatment Center
The center began trial operations at the beginning of
Jumada al-Ula 1433 AH (1973 A.H.) and now
receives diabetes follow-up cases through outpatient
clinics daily. The center offers specialized services for
diabetes treatment and follow-up, including a

(Report Components)
What are the activities and tasks given to you during this
month?
I actively participated in a number of crucial responsibilities
that the training department assigned me throughout this
month. Receiving and managing department-related
correspondence as well as making sure the proper protocols
were precisely and effectively followed were among my
duties. Additionally, I oversaw trainee files by keeping track
of and organizing paperwork and making sure that all
Task(s)

necessary documents were filled out accurately and sent in on
time. Helping to create training programs that complemented
the department’s strategic goals accounted for a large amount
of my effort. I also helped with the creation of annual and
quarterly reports that outlined the accomplishments,
activities, and areas for development within the department.
Finally, I was given the responsibility of gathering and
compiling training department statistics, such as trainee
performance, attendance, and feedback, which are critical for
continuous improvement and data-driven decision-making.

New skill(s)

What skills did you learn through the month?

I improved my capacities by learning a variety of new
technical and professional skills over this month. I learnt how
to handle sensitive material with care and secrecy and got
skilled at methodically handling trainee paperwork.
Additionally, I gained expertise in writing structured reports
and using Microsoft Excel to create charts for visual analysis
and compile training statistics. Additionally, when I engaged
with many stakeholders, such as administrative personnel,
supervisors, and trainees, my communication abilities
increased. My capacity to operate autonomously, multitask
under duress, and guarantee the precision and thoroughness
of departmental administrative tasks was enhanced by these
experiences.
How many meetings did you attend?
This month, I went to four meetings in all, and each one
greatly advanced my knowledge of departmental procedures
and training methods. Planning sessions for future training
Meeting(s)

programs, evaluating the results of earlier sessions, and
talking about departmental objectives and performance
indicators were all part of these discussions. I learnt how
meetings are organized and recorded in a professional
atmosphere, actively took notes, and contributed to

conversations when appropriate. These meetings gave
participants a chance to see how choices are reached
cooperatively and how various team members help to
accomplish training goals.
What are the difficulties you had this month?
Understanding the precise structure, content, and data
requirements for the monthly and yearly reports was one of
the biggest challenges I had over the month. At first, it was
difficult for me to compile the appropriate data and provide it
in a way that satisfied the department’s requirements. It was
also difficult to manage several trainee files and keep them
current while working under time limitations. As I became
acquainted with the department’s protocols and reporting
Difficulty/ Challenge(s)
instruments, I found these duties, which demanded a great
degree of organization and attention to detail, to be first
daunting.
How did you overcome these difficulties?
I took proactive measures to get around these obstacles by
consulting with my supervisor and going over previously
finished reports and documentation templates. In order to
meet deadlines without sacrificing quality, I also create daily
targets for doing certain tasks. I was able to keep track of my

work and prevent forgetting important information by using
checklists and keeping an orderly digital folder structure. I
was able to improve my comprehension and finish the
assignments with more assurance and effectiveness by better
organizing my time and asking questions when needed.
What did you learn from completing the tasks
I gained important knowledge about the inner workings of a
professional training department by completing the
prescribed responsibilities. I discovered how administrative
duties are essential to training efforts and how training
program effectiveness may be impacted by meticulousness,
accurate documentation, and prompt reporting. Additionally,
I developed a deeper understanding of how statistical data is

utilized to assess program efficacy and guide decisionmaking. These encounters served to emphasize the value of
accountability, cooperation, and communication in
accomplishing departmental objectives and upholding an
orderly and productive workplace.
What did you want to learn more?
Even though I learned a lot from the assignments I was
given, I would especially like to learn more about program
evaluation techniques and training needs assessments. I want

to know how training programs are customized to fit the
needs of certain employees and how their efficacy is assessed
once they are put into place. My abilities would be much
improved and I would be better prepared for future positions
in training management or human resources if I had practical
experience creating assessment tools, evaluating training
feedback, and applying key performance indicators (KPIs) to
training evaluation.
