This is the Resume/CV Assignment and it is due before Module 3 starts next week.

What are you doing?

For this assignment you are going to create a resume or CV. You can choose which you want to make, depending on your own career goals. Although CVs are typically longer, at this point in your career there will likely be very little difference in the length between your resume and CV, so choose the one that will suit your aspirations (i.e., don’t just choose the resume because you think it will be shorter/easier to create).

Why are you doing it?

The resume/CV is one of the first things potentials employers or graduate advisors receive from you, so it’s important that it make a great impression. That’s why you’re going to spend time working on it this semester, getting feedback and revising it to make it as clear, error-free, and impactful as possible.

How are you doing it?

You watched a lecture about the components that are typically included on a resume/CV as well as suggestions for wording, formatting, etc. Please review that lecture carefully before creating your document. We have also linked several sample resumes that you can use to think about formatting, wording, how to talk about your experiences, etc. You will need to devote some time to reviewing these resources as you prepare drafts of your final document. As a first step, you should download the Resume/CV Templates we provided to you and begin completing it with your information.

After watching the lecture and looking over the sample resumes/CVs, you should download the resume or CV template provided and begin filling in your own information. You’re going to turn the template into a document of your own. You should follow the basic principles outlined in the lecture—your name larger, dates right aligned, using action verbs to describe your experiences. Think of ALL the things you have done—volunteer experiences, Scouting, paid work, leadership in student or church organizations. You may not have a long work history yet, but you’ve done things that can help you feature your strengths on a resume. Think about those experiences and how you can best describe them to your advantage.

First draft vs. Final draft

You will be creating two drafts of your resume—a first draft and a final draft. The first draft should be submitted to iCollege to for feedback from our course TAs. As long as you submit your first draft on time (and you at least made an effort on it), you will receive credit for those portions of the assignment. You will then receive feedback from us on your first draft, and you will use that feedback to improve your document. You will submit the final (improved) draft to iCollege where it will be graded for accuracy. The first draft is due during Module 2 and the final draft is due during Module 5.

This assignment is worth 25 points. They will be distributed in the following way:

  • Initial draft for UTA review/feedback:5 points; this isn’t a rough draft but your finest, perfect, polished resume that we will help you improve even more
  • Final draft (substantially improved by incorporating feedback from your grader): 20 points

This is the dropbox for the Resume/CV First Draft and it is due before 8AM on September 8.

Check these before submitting:

  • Is your name written in a slightly larger font at the top of the document?
  • Do you include ONLY city/state in your address?
  • Are dates right aligned (or otherwise easily readable in a quick scan of your document)?
  • Do you use bullet points instead of paragraphs when describing your work experience?
  • Is your font usage consistent throughout the document (e.g., headers all the same fonts/sizes, texts consistent)?
  • If you’re submitting a resume, is it all on one page?
