Career theory and practice: Learning through case studies (4th ed.).
· Chapter 15: “The Intersection of Career and Noncareer Issues”
· Chapter 16: “Summary and Integration”
PART A-A client comes into your office lost and says, “I don’t know what I want to do in life. I don’t have any meaning or purpose in life. I keep hearing of people who have found their passion, and I have no passion. Help!”
The above statement is common. Whether an individual is just out of high school or in midlife, people struggle with feeling that they’re on the right path. How can we help? First, we need to understand their story through assessment. We then might want to test, if appropriate to further gain insight.
Initial Post:
1. Write a short case study of a woman, age 50, kids are gone, and she’s now lost and comes in says the above quote. Or come up with another individual and include their demographics.
2. List an assessment and/or testing process. Maybe you’d use the SDS, genogram, etc. Cite the resources you choose, all the data surrounding the particular test, the reliability and validity of the assessment/test, as well as a summary of what the test provided in the way of your client. Share the findings and how it directly relates to your client finding her path somehow.
Responses:
Give your peers feedback. Would you do anything different, is there anything you’d add, or any other feedback you think might be helpful? Back your assertions with references.
PART B-Use the case study you created for this week’s discussion. Write an essay further explaining how you’re going to assist this client in finding their passion, meaning, and purpose, or any other life direction. Use the textbook
and two other
peer reviewed articles. Specifically, these peer reviewed articles must be on the topic of: finding meaning, purpose, and happiness/passion in life, matching career with one’s purpose, or any other variation. In addition to the two peer reviewed articles, add a biblical reference surrounding the topic. Lastly, include what you learned by doing this assignment.
Essay is to be at least 750 words and must use the textbook. Format, in-text citations, and reference page must use APA 7th edition
PART C-W6 Discussion: Narrative Approach
Review the
Written Discussion Requirements
for this course before responding to the prompt below.
At this point you’re somewhat well versed in theory and know how to apply it. We will be using the assigned readings surrounding Super’s Developmental Theory, Career Construction Theory, and Life Designing Paradigm. In the replies you will take the part of a mental health counselor providing career counseling. Some believe that only career counselors provide career counseling; this is far from the truth, client’s will come in with career issues. Gaining their story is part of the process.
Initial Post:
Post a small part of your summative essay for your peers to review. Post enough for your peers to put together a pattern of your stories, narratives of your life, and “micro narratives.”
Responses:
As a mental health counselor, reply using the two of the theories mentioned above. Maybe you’ve discovered a narrative that you reconstruct into a “macro narrative” or life portrait, as in Chapter 12, or you are able to find meaning. There are many different ways you can respond based on these theories.
PART D-Write a 750-word essay that critically analyzes your career path based on one of the career theories. Choose a career theory with which you best align and believe will assist you in working with your chosen population. In your introduction, examine why you have chosen this theory and then respond to the following:
· The critical analysis of your own career path based on one career theory.
· Your current resume.
· Your family of origin genogram.
· The results from your Keirsey Temperament test.
· The results from your Holland Code test.
· The results from your OK College start interest profile.
· What did you learn about yourself?
· In what way would these exercises be beneficial to your future clients, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or culture?
