Week 1 Discussion: Begin Your Yellowdig DiscussionDiscuss a Social Policy
This course uses a tool called Yellowdig to facilitate discussions. See the Week 1 Prepare: Introducing Yellowdig activity for more information. You are encouraged to explore Yellowdig features, such as embedding videos and pictures, creating polls, loving and liking posts, and so on.
For this discussion post, choose a social problem affecting an oppressed population you are interested in learning about. Research the history of how that issue became a social problem and report your findings. Use this week’s readings to ensure your understanding of defining a social problem.
For this discussion, respond to one of the following prompts:
- Describe one or more social problems you’ve encountered in your community. What population is negatively impacted by these policies? In what ways are they currently being hurt by these policies?
- Describe the circumstances that led to the creation of a social policy and identify important moments of change for the policy over time. What do you think prompted these changes? Who were the key players in the policy’s creation and its evolution over time?
- Share an outside resource (image, video, article, research study, recording) that provides insight into the history or evolution of the social policy you selected. Share the link within your post and explain why you selected to share it.
- Explain which of this week’s concepts, resources, or activities is of most interest to you and your professional development. Offer some specific examples.
- Remember to practice the use of APA style for citations and references throughout the discussion activities in this course. All information not derived from your own knowledge or experience should include an in-text citation and a reference at the end of the post to show the reader where it came from.
- Attaching an article, video, podcast, meme, et cetera, as part of your post is always a good idea, but remember that you will need to write sufficient text in the post to meet the required point total for the post. Points will not be earned for merely attaching the resource and submitting a post without any descriptive text.
