Discussion Assignment Instructions
The Discussions allow you the opportunity to apply what you have learned from the Module: Week’s readings. There are 2 parts to each Discussion: thread and replies.
Both parts must be posted and written in a substantive manner, without spelling and grammatical errors to earn credit. Average substantive interaction will earn lower grades than above average substantive interaction.
Part A: Reserve and Define a Key Topic
From the readings assigned in the same modules as the discussion threads, you will select, define, and explain a key topic to research and discuss. Please post the topic you wish to reserve in the subject line of your thread. You will select a different topic from your classmates to discuss. Thus, the first student to post on particular topic stakes claim to that topic. When defining your key topic, use a source other than the textbook. Give a clear and concise overview of the essentials relevant to understanding this key topic. Also explain why you are interested in this topic, i.e., academic curiosity; application to a current issue related to employment; or any other professional rationale.
Part B: Thread
After you have successfully reserved your key topic, begin using the Internet to research at least 5 recent scholarly articles (published within the last 5 years) that relate to the concept. Articles must be found in reputable professional websites/journals that deal with the content of our course. Popular general reading magazines and online sources such as Wikipedia are not permissible.
After reading the articles, select the one scholarly article relating to your key topic that you wish to discuss. Your posting must be in the textbox of your thread where you originally reserved your key topic. Do not submit a second thread. In the event the textbox formatting could be lost, please also attach a Microsoft Word file to your posting. Please adhere to the following format:
1.
Comparison: Compare your research with what you have studied in the module/week, noting differences or commonalities about your key topic, and providing evidence that you have extended your understanding of this topic beyond the textbook readings. This is an opportunity for you to cite the additional articles you initially researched. This section should be at least 200 words.
2.
Article Summary: Using your own words, provide a clear and concise summary of the article you selected. This section should be at least 200 words.
3.
Application: Specifically state how your key topic has been applied to real-world business or discuss the potential it must influence today’s business world. Your application should show a professional rationale for the significance of your key topic. This section should be at least 100 words.
Part C: Replies
You are required to post substantive written responses to at least 2 other students’ threads.
Substantive responses in contrast to perfunctory responses, add value to the discussion, enhance learning, and contain references to any new concepts or ideas presented. You should identify the name of the authors of the posts you are replying to. The word count for each reply must be 200-300 words.
In composing substantive responses, you can do a few things, such as:
· Compare/contrast the findings of others with your research.
· Compare how the findings of others relate/add to the concepts learned in the required readings.
· Share additional knowledge regarding the key topic relative to the postings of others.
Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Most of the time plagiarism occurs as an innocent oversight of cutting and pasting. Regardless of reason, you will receive 0 points for the entire discussion (which includes all 3 parts). It is recommended that you review your postings prior to submission to ensure your sources are properly credited.
