[This assignment requires that you use what you have learned in class about
the elements of a research study to create your own research project report in short paragraph form. The research topic and some articles on the topic have been provided for you.
You will select seven to include in this literature review. You are required to use supportive research that you find in peer-reviewed journal articles about the topic. Use the literature review matrix to take notes as you read. Then you will present key insights from each article.
This literature review will identify knowledge on the topic and clarify what is already known about the topic. After highlighting key insights from each article, you will create a paragraph that is a synthesis to reveal a picture of patterns and inconsistencies in the literature.
Next you will show the link to a psychological theory on the topic, and then point to the gap in the literature which your study will fill.
Open with an introduction to your topic. Explain the key research question. Then explain why this question is important. Introduce and define any key words or concepts that the reader will need to know to understand your topic.
Subheading 1 – Literature on Grit and Big 5 Personality Traits
[The objective of the literature review is to provide your reader an overview of the current research on your topic. What have other researchers found about grit and Big 5 personality traits? You will want to include the key findings and evidence from the research articles on your topic. Explain how the findings are similar and how they are different. In the conclusion of this section, focus on major themes and provide a synthesis. By the end of the literature review, the reader should feel they understand what is currently known about your topic. In a paragraph or two synthesis section, bring together the key highlights learned about grit and Big 5 personality factors. Consider what was most meaningful and useful. Consider controversies in the literature if you discovered any of those. This section should give your reader a good picture of some key literature and what is known on your topic.]
Subheading 2 – Theory
Quantitative studies are developed based on a specific theory or theories [aka theoretical framework or theoretical perspective]. This section should briefly describe the theory you have selected to support your research plan. The actual theory should be cited and any descriptive information you provide should also include cited support.
This section should explain how the selected theory is relevant to the research problem/question/purpose.
Subheading 3 – Gap in the Literature / Problem Statement
[Provide a paragraph that states any gap in the literature that you found that your study can fill [this is a problem statement]. For example, is there a gap in literature showing the relationship between grit and Big 5 personality traits, or are replication studies needed?]
Subheading 4 – Hypothesis
[Clearly state the hypothesis for your research. Remember that a good hypothesis is both specific and measurable.]
Subheading 5 – Use of FirstPass
Writing tip: If you are a writer who likes “recipes” for good writing, then use evidence from at least two different sources in every paragraph. It’s the MEAL+ plan. Start with a
Main idea, include
Evidence from source 1, then evidence from source 2, then an
Analysis which shows how the two pieces of evidence relate to each other and to your main idea, and lastly,
Link this paragraph to the next paragraph. Think back to the elements of critical thinking. (You can use the “Analytic Style of Thinking” Campus resource in the What You Need to Know for Week 9 activity).
One APA formatting note: You do not need an index or abstract for this paper.
