In learning, the best way for me is to study the material voraciously. The more difficult the better because I love strategizing, thinking and planning to come to a solution or response. In a university setting where there are goals of completion and earning a grade, I find that I perform at my best when compared to other areas of problem solving. Having something to strive for motivates me. Even when not in school I need to have something to work towards, though.

           The culture as set forth for schooling, where you receive an assignment then work towards receiving a grade upon assignment completion, enlightens me. The whole picture of where the professor gives an assignment and you have to put your knowledge, and study skills to the test to attain a score for your efforts, with the goal being 100% is best. Things that I would not normally think of puts me at ease and relaxes me. I like studying and reading. So, when given an assignment where I have no idea about the subject matter, I feel motivated.

           Wang (2024) states that “cultural factors, such as communication styles, student-teacher relationships, and parental involvement significantly impact how students engage with educational content”. When I was younger and when I communicated, I was more of a passive type of communicator. In everyday circumstances, when dealing with issues where I was uncomfortable, I tended to shy away and hope the encounter resolved itself. Now, I am usually the opposite when completing assignments or when a particularly risky issue comes up. When the issue needs to be resolved, I tend to have a more assertive communication style. I feel this is important when completing assignments as you need to come across with confidence and be sure of the message you are trying to convey. However, ultimately it is up to your professor to determine if you are successful in your assessment or analysis. But putting your best foot forward is the type of confidence you must have. I have a polite personality. With teacher-student relationships, I always show appropriate respect because this is the way I was raised by my parents. Showing respect and being polite was mandated in our household growing up. In addition, parental involvement has always been a point of emphasis in my life. When needed the assistance was always there, however, I usually preferred completing assignments on my own. For example, in my economics class in high school we were given an assignment where we were to create a product, market it, and make an actual commercial, all for the teacher of course. We were given resources that we needed from our teacher. A video camera for recording the commercial was also provided. This was a fun assignment. I created a key that could be used interchangeably with any type of lock. This idea was interesting to me and the commercial was quite comedic.

           These different cultural styles affected me in a way that was unique to me. In areas that were more personal to me such as my communication styles, upbringing, and my student-teacher relationships, they affected how I acquired, used and retained information (Wang, 2024).
