#1 MN (Minnesota state) Disability Categories (due 1/18) this week
*list MN 13 disability areas,
*eligibility criteria,-DO NOT COPY & PASTE ALL OF THE CRITERIA FROM THE WEBSITE! Only, write a short synopsis in your own words.
*three characteristics of each area,
*2 classroom tips for each disability area.
A couple of helpful links are below. You may want/need to do additional individual research to be able to answer all of the questions above.
#2 How Difficult Can This Be? F.A.T. City (1/25) next week
You will be watching “How Difficult Can This Be? The F.A.T. City Workshop–Understanding Learning Disabilities” by Dr. Richard Lavoie. Check on youtube. At the conclusion of the video you will be reflecting on what you saw and felt. Answer the following questions as part of your reflection: What did you see as Dr. Lavoie’s implicit bias as a teacher? What are the participants interpretation of past practices? What will you do to ensure changes in your own mindset in regard to teaching? What did you feel? What surprised you, What you had never thought about before, What are some important takeaways for you, is there anything you questioned? Do not recap the video, I have seen it several times. Truly reflect. The reflection should be at least
3 pages long, double-spaced.
Caveat: The video was filmed in 1989. You need to ignore the clothes, the hairstyles, and some of the language-ex. Dr. Lavoie used the word “retarded”. Remember that this was a different time, we have grown, we have changed, and with that comes changes in acceptable verbiage. The message of the video is stronger than the few things you need to look beyond.
Students who watch this generally walk away with a new view of Special Education. I hope you will also see the value.
#3 – View & reflect on Temple Grandin’s TED talk “The World Needs All Kinds of Minds” (due 1/25) next week
View and reflect on Dr. Temple Grandin’s TED talk. If you have not heard of her, Dr. Grandin was diagnosed with autism as a young child. Doctor’s suggested her mother institutionalize her, but her mother refused. Instead, she employed people to work with Temple. There is an HBO special of Dr. Grandin’s life if you want to learn more about her, it is phenomenal. Here is a link to guide you to it.
The TED talk for you to watch and reflect on is found here:
Use your critical thinking skills to analyze the obstacles Dr. Grandin faced as a young child and as an adult, particular insights she shared in the different ways people think, and how will you incorporate what you have seen and heard into your own teaching. Your reflection should once again be 2 pages, double-spaced
