Use Mississippi State and Federal Education Laws

Objective:

The purpose of this assignment is to provide aspiring school administrators with firsthand insight into the legal challenges and responsibilities faced by current administrators. This will allow you to gain a deeper understanding of the legal aspects of educational leadership and how these issues are navigated in a real-world setting.

Instructions:

  • Choose one or both of your mentors  to interview for this assignment.
  • Develop a list of 5-8 questions that focus on legal issues in education. Your questions should cover topics such as:
    1. Student rights and discipline
    2. Staff and employment law issues
    3. Compliance with state and federal education laws (e.g., IDEA, Title IX, FERPA) Use Mississippi State and Federal Education Laws
    4. Handling of lawsuits or legal disputes involving the school
    5. Policy development and implementation to prevent legal issues
    6. The role of legal counsel in decision-making
  • Example questions:
    1. What is one of the most challenging legal issues you have faced as an administrator, and how did you handle it?
    2. Can you share an experience where you had to navigate student discipline while ensuring compliance with legal requirements?
    3. How do you stay informed about changes in education law and ensure that your school/district remains compliant?
    4. What steps do you take to minimize legal risks associated with staff employment?
  • Schedule a time to meet with the selected administrator, either in person or virtually.
  • Conduct the interview, taking detailed notes or recording the session (with the interviewee’s permission).
  • Be sure to ask follow-up questions if clarification or more detail is needed.
  • After the interview, write a 2 page APA formatted (not including the cover page, there is no need to provide a reference page for this assignment) reflection on the key legal issues discussed. Analyze how the administrator handled these issues and what you learned from their experiences. Consider how these insights might influence your approach to legal matters as a future administrator.
