3-1 Discussion: Sustainability and Social Justice

Possible Points: 40

In this discussion, you will consider sustainability issues related to social justice or DEI. To identify a sustainability issue related to social justice or DEI, consider how issues such as the following relate to sustainability:

  • Ableism
  • Classism
  • Sexism
  • Racism
  • Ageism
  • Homophobia
  • Mental illness discrimination
  • Religious intolerance or extremism
  • Other social justice or DEI issue of your choice

Discussing challenges that face our world often means investigating opinions and ideas different from your own. Remember to remain thoughtful and respectful towards your peers and instructor in your initial and response discussion posts. 

Create one initial post and respond to at least two of your classmates.  

For your initial post, address the following:    

  1. Share an article or video (from the CQ Researcher database or other appropriate location from the Shapiro Library) about a sustainability issue related to social justice or DEI.
    • A link to the CQ Researcher database is provided in this module’s optional resources.
  2. Why is this issue a sustainability concern?
  3. What conflict makes the issue challenging to address?

For your response posts, address the following:    

  1. How do you agree or disagree with your peer about the conflict that makes the issue challenging to address?
  2. How could resolving the conflict your peer mentioned support sustainability?
    • What might the process look like for pursuing conflict resolution or restorative justice?
  3. How would human equity be fostered if the social justice or DEI issue your peer shared were resolved?

Remember, your contributions to the discussion play an important part in building the classroom learning community. This assignment is graded on the quality of your initial post and at least two response posts to your classmates. If you refer to any resources, be sure to include an attribution (or citation) for each.
