Folic acid (one of the B vitamins) is necessary for the normal incorporation of thymine (a major component of
DNA) into DNA. Why are neural tube and brain defects often seen in the babies of women who do not get enough
folic acid in their diets during pregnancy? (Hint: Think about the events of the cell cycle and the rapid growth and
development occurring in embryonic development.)
During pregnancy the baby requires a lot of cells to grow a brain and a spine. Folic acid helps make thymine,
and this helps the baby to copy their DNA so that the brain and spine can grow in a normal manner.
