Background
Tyler was hired for a sales role despite his non-sales background. He was selected primarily based on the strong communication skills and positive attitude he demonstrated during interviews. Tyler completed the standard product training and onboarding process alongside other new team members. In the past six months Tyler has been able to complete the targets for the number of calls to customers, but not the targets for closing deals or generating new leads. Customers remark that Tyler is friendly and polite, but he seems hesitant when asked detailed questions about the product or when needing to handle customer negotiations or objections. Tyler has good attendance at meetings and puts in effort, but he is frustrated about regularly missing the targets. He sees other new hires brought on at the same time routinely hitting these targets.
Based on Tyler’s situation above, analyze and answer the following:
·
Description of the Performance Problem: State what problems Tyler is experiencing based on the information above. Consider whether the issue stems from a lack of ability, a lack of motivation or a combination of both.
·
Analysis of Performance Management Approach: Identify the approach the company is using to evaluate performance. Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the company’s current performance evaluation approach.
·
Evaluating Alignment with Best Practices: Critique the extent to which the company’s performance management approach identified above aligns with best practices in performance management.
·
Suggested Action: Based on the reason for the performance issue you chose in question one, suggest how Tyler’s manager should respond to the performance problems. Suggest the type of intervention that the manager should consider. Do not propose a detailed plan but indicate the nature of the follow-up steps based on your diagnosis.
·
Balancing Christian Concern with Performance Standards: How can Tyler’s manager demonstrate Christian concern and compassion for Tyler’s frustration and struggles, while simultaneously upholding the necessary performance standards and expectations of the sales role? Quote and apply at least one verse from the Bible.
