The development of advanced practice nursing roles globally shows how important quality and safety competencies are in guiding practice. When looking at the variability in education, regulation, and scope of practice across countries, it becomes clear that standardized competencies are essential to ensure safe and consistent care (Wheeler et al., 2022). Even though QSEN is not directly mentioned in the article, the themes align closely with QSEN competencies such as safety, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and systems-based practice (QSEN Institute, 2023).
One part that really stood out to me was the discussion about inconsistencies in title protection and regulation. That resonated with me because, as I move from the RN role into the APRN role, the scope of practice and accountability increases. If regulation is inconsistent, it can lead to confusion about role expectations and competency standards, which ultimately affects patient safety (Wheeler et al., 2022). Advanced practice comes with greater autonomy, but that autonomy must be supported by strong educational preparation and regulatory oversight.
QSEN competencies help define the APRN role by expanding responsibility beyond bedside care into leadership and systems thinking. As an RN, my job focuses on implementing safe, evidence-based care and monitoring patient outcomes. As an APRN, I transition into diagnosing, prescribing, evaluating treatment, and participating in quality improvement initiatives. That shift requires deeper clinical reasoning and a stronger understanding of how healthcare systems function. National data continue to show that quality and safety education remains foundational to nursing practice at all levels, ultimately reinforcing the importance of these competencies as nurses advance in their roles (Djukic et al., 2025).
The transition from RN to APRN is not just about increased independence. It reflects an expanded responsibility for improving outcomes for the patient. QSEN provides a framework that supports this growth by emphasizing accountability, collaboration, and evidence-based decision-making (QSEN Institute, 2023). As advanced practice nurses, we not only provide direct patient care but also take an active role in improving how care is delivered within the healthcare system.
