Assignment Type

Case Study: Alfa Hospital and the Knowledge Gap

Alfa Hospital is a well-known private hospital located in a busy city. The hospital built a strong reputation due to its experienced doctors, nurses, and medical technicians who had worked there for many years.

Recently, from nursing staff several senior nurses and two specialist doctors retired within a short period. After their retirement, junior staff faced many problems in handling emergency cases and complex patient situations. These problems and complexities led to many issues like treatment delays, frequent patient complaints, and poor coordination among departments.

The hospital had policy manuals, treatment guidelines, and patient records, but many crucial skills were not documented. Senior personnel frequently used their experience to make snap judgments, spot early warning signs, and provide informal guidance to junior colleagues.Much of this experience-based knowledge was shared through observation and practice rather than written instructions. When experienced staff left, this tacit knowledge was lost.

To tackle the problem, the hospital administration implemented Knowledge Management strategies including electronic medical records, standard operating procedures (SOPs), ongoing training sessions, and mentorship programs. Nevertheless, certain employees opposed these alterations, arguing that documenting was labour-intensive and that experiential knowledge was difficult to record.

The hospital currently confronts the difficulty of handling both tacit and explicit knowledge to enhance patient care and organizational effectiveness.
