In this assessment you will create a report and reflective journal piece that comprises a complete analysis of a misleading visualisation of your choice. You will be required to find a case with a misleading visualisation, identify and critique the issues present, and provide suggestions on how to improve the visualisation that could accurately and effectively deliver insights. You will also include a reflection relating to personal or professional development. Your work should include at least one annotated screenshot of the visualisation that you have chosen, highlighting the issues present and your suggestions for improvement.
Your application of the concepts, best practices and ethical guidelines taught in this course to a real-world case will enable you to develop the skillset for delivering transparent, unbiased visual narratives for evidence-based decision making in your professional practice.
Learning Outcomes
The targeted Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) for this assessment are:
CLO1: Apply concepts, best practices and ethical guidelines related to data visualisation and storytelling.
CLO2: Critically analyse and evaluate different data visualisations and storytelling techniques that meet the needs and requirements of target audience.
Marking Criteria
Note: The marking rubric shows 100 marks and will be converted to 30%.
This assessment will measure your ability to:
Identify the relevant audience and objective of the visualisation (15%)
Critique the visualisation issues with respect to the selected audience and objective using best practices and ethical guidelines (35%)
Provide suggestions to improve the visualisation using best practices (20%)
Reflect on personal and/or professional development lessons (15%)
Produce a quality report (15%)
Assessment Details
For this assessment you will need to locate a visualisation that is misleading or in some other way poorly represented. This original visualisation may be static or dynamic, but it must be able to be expressed as annotated screenshots (no hyperlinks to dynamic content are to be included).
Your report will begin by identifying the intended audience and objective, along with a screenshot of the visualisation. You will then identify three (3) issues and critique them before providing suggestions on how to improve the visualisation so that it accurately and effectively delivers insights. You must justify your answers and include at least one (1) annotated screenshot to support your critique and solutions. Finally, you will write a reflection relating to personal or professional development. Please cite all screenshots and sources using RMIT Harvard referencing format.
Note: You do not need to create/ develop visualisation(s) from scratch using visualisation tools for this assessment. You will need to create/ develop visualisation(s) based on the given case study and associated dataset in the next assessment.
Presentation format
Your report must be submitted as a Word or PDF document.
Your report should include appropriately annotated screenshots of the visualisation – you may use any software of your choice to create annotations e.g. Skitch, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop, Miro.
Recommended report structure
The following structure is recommended for your report:
Introduction: identify the audience and objective
Begin your report by identifying the relevant audience and objective(s) for your chosen visualisation. Be sure to include at least one screenshot of the visualisation that you have chosen.
Critical analysis of the visualisation
Identify and explain three issues with this visualisation considering the identified audience and objective. Refer to relevant best visualisation practices and ethical guidelines. Include annotated screenshots as necessary.
For each issue identified, propose and justify one suggestion for improving the visualisation. Include annotated screenshots as necessary.
Reflection
Reflect on how you can apply what you have learned to your personal development and professional practice.
Prompting questions:
Can you apply what you have learnt towards improving existing practices at your workplace? Or can you imagine how existing practices might be improved at your workplace?
In terms of data visualisation, what does your organisation do well and what could be improved?
Have you become more aware of common biases and omissions in visualisation?
Reference list
Use RMIT Harvard referencing format
Use your own judgement to determine how many words to use for each section of the report. However, please remain within the overall word limit of 1,000 words (+/- 10% excluding visuals, reference list, figures and tables) – submissions that do not fall within the parameters of the word limit will not be marked!
Note, this assignment was initially done at studyne.com where I completed it successfully, but there are a few visual changes that I would like your help adding. Once I accept your bid, I will share with you the tutor at studyne sent and you can check out how it can be improved.
Sources of visualizations
Any public sources including but not limited to:
The Reddit thread r/dataisbeautiful contains many examples of visualisations
Annual company report. For public companies, these are usually readily available on the company website
News articles e.g. The Economist
RMIT Learning Lab
The Learning Lab is a rich source of information for the requirements of many types of assessment.
Framework for writing reflective pieces
DIEP (Describe, Interpret, Evaluate, Plan) The DIEP framework guides your reflective writing and helps you stay focused on the task.
