Instructions to complete this discussion:

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum, read Chapter 1 from your course textbook. In addition, complete the LIB101: Week 1 Civilization TourLinks to an external site. interactive.

In this discussion, you will compare how different ancient societies expressed their ideas about the human experience.

Step 1: Choose two civilizations found in the course materials for this week.

Step 2: Choose one of the following six themes through which these societies expressed their ideas about the human experience:

• Governance

• Ethics or religion

• Gender roles and relationships

• Life stages

• Family roles and relationships

• Technological or cultural innovation

Step 3: Choose two of the following eight areas where these societies expressed their ideas about the human experience through the chosen theme:

• Law

• Rulership

• Art

• Literature

• Philosophy

• Theology

• Architecture

• Music

Step 4: In your initial posting, compare how your chosen theme is expressed in the two societies, and through two areas of those societies. How did these societies and individuals understand and express what it means to be human? What societies did you find most interesting and why?

The following is an example only of how you might complete this activity. Make sure to choose your own civilizations, themes, and areas of focus from the lists above:

· You could choose to compare the two civilizations of (a) ancient Egypt and (b) ancient India.

· You could choose to compare the theme of technological and cultural innovation in ancient Egypt and ancient India.

· You could choose to compare how technological and cultural innovation was expressed by each of these civilizations in the areas of (a) poetry and (b) architecture.

Your initial must be at least 250 words in length.
