The parker Family scenario
FEMALE SPEAKER: Well, I think we should wrap things up.
00:04- Does this same time work for you next week
AKER: Yes, it’s fine.
00:08
FEMALE SPEAKER: Let me give you an appointment card.
00:11
By the way, something occurred to me that might interest you.
00:25
I have a colleague that’s doing a study on the impact of
00:28
hoarding on family members.
00:30
She wants to identify potential interventions.
00:34
I think she’d love to talk to you and Stephanie.
00:37
FEMALE SPEAKER: Talk to me?
00:39
FEMALE SPEAKER: She’s paying participants in her study.
00:41
I don’t know how much.
00:43
FEMALE SPEAKER: Do I have to do it?
00:45
I–
00:46
I just don’t like people knowing my business.
00:48
FEMALE SPEAKER: It’s totally confidential and anonymous.
00:51
FEMALE SPEAKER: I don’t know.
00:52
FEMALE SPEAKER: I think it’d be a great
00:54
opportunity for you.
00:55
FEMALE SPEAKER: I don’t know.
00:56
Would she have to come see my home?
01:00
I mean, I don’t like people seeing how I live.
01:03
FEMALE SPEAKER: Don’t worry about that.
01:07
You should at least talk to her.
01:09
Like I said, there’s some money in it for you.
01:13
Can I give her your number?
Research resulting in physical or emotional trauma for participants, without informed
consent, is undoubtedly an ethical violation. However, other situations are not as clear.
One of the reasons for debate about ethical issues is because ethics are opinions
informed by people’s values, and people have different values. There may not be one
definitive right answer. To get closer to an answer, though, researchers dialogue with
themselves and submit their proposals to authorities such as IRBs and ethics committees
for checks and balances.
Ethical and cultural considerations impact every stage of the research process—from
problem identification to recruitment of participants to dissemination of findings. For this
Discussion, you view and respond to a scenario involving research study recruitment. As
you do so, consider which, if any, ethical mandates or standards are violated.
