Wk 1 Environmental Disaster Memo Guide

Use the following instructions to help you complete the Wk 1 – Summative Assessment: Environmental Disaster Memo.

Instructions

ReadEnvironmental Disasters” from the University Library.

Choose1 environmental incident from “Environmental Disasters.”

Researchthe environmental incident you selected.

·         Find at least 5 additional resources related to the environmental incident to establish the relationship between the environmental toxins from the incident and the human health impacts.

1 of your sources should be the Toxicological Profiles website from the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. This site allows you to search specific toxins that were present during the environmental incident and learn about potential health impacts.

1.     Visit Toxicological Profiles. Toxicological Profiles.

2.     Search for the toxin you selected from reading “Environmental Disasters.”  To do this, scroll down the page until you reach A-Z Index of Tox Profiles. Locate the toxin you wish to learn more about. For this example, ammonia has been selected.

3.     Click on the toxin of your choice. You will arrive at the toxicological profile for your toxin.

4.     On this page, scroll down until you see Toxicological Profile Access and select either the Relevance to Public Health or Health Effects chapters. A PDF of your selected chapter will open. For the selected toxin, summarize the potential human health impacts, which are discussed in chapters on public health and health effects. These chapters will vary depending on the toxin.

5.     After finding information for your selected toxin, create an annotated bibliography with your resources. It may be helpful to review the Sample Annotated Bibliography from the University’s Center for Writing Excellence.

6.     After completing your annotated bibliography, write a 700- to 1,050-word memo to establish the relationship between the environmental toxins from the incident and the human health impacts. In your memo:

a.     Summarize the environmental incident. Be sure to include when and where it occurred, what caused the incident, who was involved, and what populations were impacted.

b.     Discuss the environmental toxins that were present.

c.     Describe the short-term (acute) and long-term (chronic) human health impacts from the toxins that were present during the environmental incident.

d.     Identify 3 important lessons learned from the environmental incident that the company can use to inform their safety protocols.

Format your references according to APA guidelines.
