Module 5 Lesson 1

TED talk speeches are speeches that are informative and usually non-biased. They can range from a couple minutes to about an hour. They are conducted in front of a live audience. The speakers provide a great example of how to conduct yourself during a speech.

Body Paragraph #1

During Ron Finley’s speech about gardens, it was clear that the speaker had practiced his speech. It was very well rehearsed. Ron Finley did a great job providing personal detail to keep the audience intrigued. He provides significant data with the number of gardens surrounding specific square areas. When it comes to his transitions, they were clear and easy to understand. The transitions let the audience know that the topic of the speech would be changing in direction. For example, when he mentions his legacy. The speaker makes sure to include his children into the description of his legacy. He made other great analogies, such as describing soil needed for plants as we are the soil that are needed for our future generations. The comedy lines he includes in his speech keep the audience intrigued. The audience showed significant focus when the speaker mentioned that kids will eat what they grow. They immediately caught the comedic effect of the speaker by laughing at the joke. Both the speaker’s introduction and conclusion were extremely effective. He quickly grabbed the audience’s attention when introducing his topic. At the end of the speech, the audience gave him a standing ovation to show their appreciation to the speech that was presented.

Body Paragraph #2

The speaker did various things to increase credibility. He many pictures of events that the speaker referred to. Ron Finley also included many different statistics which let the audience know that the speaker had done research on the topic. It was very clear that the speaker was comfortable with his demeanor being confident and passionate. All of his statements were professional and organized. He made sure to emphasize his voice and remain facially expressive at the right times which made it more intriguing for the audience to follow along. He also did a good job with his body language during his presentation. Signaling different hand gestures and moving around while speaking to the audience.

Body Paragraph #3

If I were to be presenting this speech, I feel it would’ve been better to include his legacy at the beginning of the speech. This would’ve given a better introduction to catch the audience. Besides this, I feel the speaker did a great job organizing the rest of the speech. I would also advise the speaker to not look down when giving his speech. This makes the audience feel that the speaker is nervous or losing his train of thought. Although his delivery was captivating, he did come off as biased when presenting the information. With the delivery of certain statements and his body language, it provided a negative connotation letting the audience believe the speaker’s perspective towards the topic was negative.

In conclusion, Ron Finley did an amazing job presenting his speech on the importance of gardening. The information he presented was clear and easy to understand. During his presentation he did an amazing job at keeping the audience intrigued. Ron’s speech provided a great example of how to present a speech.
