· Explain how your differences in experience or belief may have shaped your philosophies in different ways.

· Offer a suggestion, based on your experience, which is related to their goals and plans for expanding their awareness of issues beyond their current practice in alignment with Walden’s mission for social change and the SDOH framework.

Note: Your responses to colleagues should be substantial (250 words minimum), supported with scholarly evidence from your research and/or the Learning Resources, and properly cited using APA Style. Personal anecdotes are acceptable as part of a meaningful response but cannot stand alone as a response. Your responses should enrich the initial post by supporting and/or adding a fresh viewpoint and be constructive, enhancing the learning experience for all students.

Week 1 Discussion – Philosophies of Nursing Practice

The philosophy of nursing practice influences theories and principles of nursing. It is a belief system and model that influences nursing practices in patient care, critical decision making, and effective communication with patients and families. According to McEwen and Willis (2019), nursing philosophy is concerned with human lives purpose, the reality and nature of human beings, and the lack of knowledge. Philosophy has been defined “as a study of problems that are ultimate, abstract, and general”. These problems are concerned with the nature of existence, knowledge, morality, reason, and human purpose.

My personal nursing philosophy is comparable to Walden University’s vision and mission in that I want to gain more knowledge and skills to improve quality of life for people medically and mentally to create change and overcome societal barriers. According to the Walden University S, “their single focus is to help students succeed and become contributing members of their profession and community”.

My name is Valdane Robinson and I have been a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner in Adult-Gerontology Primary Care since 2018. I achieved my Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing in 2009 and a Master of Science Degree in Nursing with an emphasis in Leadership/Management in 2013 from Stevenson University.

Currently, I am the owner of Superb Pain Management Center as well as Superb Wellness Center. The goal of the organization is to improve the quality of life and address the social determinants of health of my patients with chronic pain. My organizational goal is also to strive to make a positive impact on population health by lessening the opioids used, reduce the risk of opioid addiction, overdose, and death by addressing the use of adjunct non-pharmacological therapies such as: (1) MLS Laser Therapy, which is an FDA approved treatment that uses concentrated light energy to stimulate the body’s own healing process to minimize pain, inflammation, arthritis, and reduce recovery times so the patient can return to a pain-free life. (2) PEMF is a revolutionary wellness modality that utilizes soothing Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields to stimulate and exercise the body’s cells. PEMF is trusted worldwide to support the body’s natural healing and regulating abilities. (3) Sanexas is a neoGen device which is an electrical cell-signaling device that uses the electronic signal energy waves produced by an ultra-high digital frequency generator. And (4) Proactive Wellness Vitamins and Nutrients Supplementation with Cellular Absorption Technology to help reduce the reliance on opioids for pain management.

We propose to offer our patients more nutrients to ease their chronic pain while tapering their opioid use. Some of the population that we serve are not financially able to purchase supplements and non-pharmacological services that are often as effective as opioids but are not covered by insurance. Patients with a diagnosis of substance use disorder are suffering from various chronic diseases and may have had motor vehicle accidents and/or failed surgeries that have resulted in chronic pain. These patients are finding it difficult to have their pain controlled by primary care practitioners and emergency departments. Superb Pain Management Center seeks to provide a grant-funded alternative to prescribing opioids and offers to taper opioids for those patients who voluntarily agree. This proposed program addresses the social determinants of health and seeks to reduce the risks of addiction, overdose, and death from chronic opioid use.

As a certified registered nurse practitioner (CRNP), I play an integral role in the healthcare system by delivering superb clinical care and knowledge to patients. My duties as a CRNP are to assess, diagnose, and treat my patients by providing education, advocate for the patients needs, and guarantee them the highest level of care.

The Doctor of Nursing Practices student has an important role as a social change agent in the healthcare model. According to Adler & Rehkopf (2008), we are tasked in eliminating health disparities for social change by using the SDOH framework, which is a fundamental, even though not always so explicit, but nonetheless a goal of public health research and practice. A DNP-prepared nurse is also employed to promote social change by encouraging the use of evidence-based practices and other strategies to enhance patient outcomes, directed at affecting health disparities. As a DNP student, I will affect change by actively participating in community, state, and federal programs that are geared to make social change. The US Department of Health and Human Services states that just promoting healthy choices will not eliminate these and other health disparities.

Philosophy of Nursing Practice

The primary goals of nursing are to ensure the health and safety of individuals, promote their recovery from sickness, and alleviate any pain or suffering they may be experiencing. Caring for the whole person is the overarching goal of nursing, which is in turn motivated by a wide range of ethical principles (Green, 2018). Caring is the cornerstone of my nursing philosophy. Philosophy in nursing helps me stay on track and identify arguments that make sense considering what I’ve learned in the field.

My whole nursing career has been focused on mental health, so that’s where my passion lies. I am deeply passionate about this area of specialty. My compassionate nursing philosophy greatly impacts my everyday decisions in my nursing career. A caring attitude, like Watson’s Human Caring Theory, can serve as a basic blueprint for bettering interpersonal relationships and creating a healing atmosphere (Wei & Watson, 2019). When my patients see the genuine care and interest I have in my work, they gain confidence in me and feel comfortable enough to speak up to me about their health and medical concerns.

I aim to enhance my comprehension of diversity as a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). Both our patients and our nation demonstrate significant diversity. As I get greater familiarity with their diverse backgrounds and cultures, I will be more prepared to engage with them and integrate their cultural aspects into the care plan. Moreover, variety has a significant role in the presence of the minority population. Gaining a comprehensive comprehension of diversity can greatly influence the performance of our vulnerable populations and the health care system (Gopalkrishnan, 2018). In my Igbo culture, mental health disorders are not openly spoken or acknowledged. Prohibited. Individuals, including both family members and friends, will actively avoid associating with someone who is seeking psychiatric treatment. My objective is to enhance public knowledge on the entitlement to adequate healthcare for individuals with mental health disorders, enabling them to effectively manage their mental well-being.

To meet Walden’s mandate of advocating for social change, my intention is to collaborate with legislators to alleviate the issue of homelessness. To foster constructive societal transformation, my objective is to actively denounce the inequities in mental health prevalent within low-income areas. A significant number of individuals with mental disabilities are unemployed and get insufficient disability benefits to cover their rent, resulting in homelessness. Hence, devising a comprehensive strategy to aid them in their tasks will mostly resolve the issue. As an advocate, it is imperative for me to vocally oppose the societal abuse of these homeless patients.

Ultimately, compassion and love are at the heart of nursing. Passion is the compass that nurses will use in their practice. Since mental health patients are frequently disregarded by society, they necessitate supplementary treatment. As a Walden University Doctor of Nursing Practice, I feel compelled to advocate on behalf of these patients. I intend to communicate with lawmakers to boost jobs and slow the rate of population increase.
