Using Giger and Davidhizar’s Transcultural Assessment Model, perform a comprehensive assessment of how your selected cultural group’s beliefs and practices might impact healthcare decision-making, treatment adherence, your communication, your interventions, and your education to align with the patient’s cultural values and preferences.

Utilize your mind map from module 1 and the textbook’s FIG. 1.1 and FIG. 1.2 in Chapter 1 to thoroughly outline your assessment and
expand upon each of the six cultural phenomena for your selected group.

Submission Instructions:

· The paper is to be clear and concise, and students will lose points for improper grammar, punctuation and misspelling.

· The paper should be formatted per current APA and 4-5 pages in length, excluding the title and references page. Incorporate a minimum of 5 current (published within the last five years)

Cultural Assessment of the Hmong Culture: Healthcare Beliefs and Practices

Introduction

A. Capture the reader’s interest: Present the Hmong ethnic group and explain how their customs and attitudes toward the world, including the sphere of medicine, differ from the norms of American society.

B. Build case through logic: Explain why a cultural assessment must be performed to enhance the quality of health care as well as share the argument in favor of cultural competence in the medical field.

C. Thesis statement: With the use of the Transcultural Assessment Model by Giger and Davidhizar, this assessment will determine the ways in which the Hmong culture impacts healthcare decisions, medication compliance, communication, approaches, and patient enlightenment.

Communication

A. Support: Explain the major language issues experienced by many Hmong people, including the elderly who mainly speak Hmong and have poor English skills.

1. Example: Avoiding eye contact may not be a sign of disrespect but rather a way of showing respect in the Hmong culture, as non-verbal communication plays a significant role in their society.

2. Example: The need to involve interpreters or relatives who can translate the information given and who can also understand the content given to the patient.

B. Support: Appreciating the nature of silence in the Hmong culture as not only a sign of compliance or agreement but also as a sign of disagreement or disrespect.

1. Example: Cultural values have to be taken into consideration when it comes to discussing a patient’s symptoms or treatment plans, including spirituality.

Healthcare Decision-Making and Treatment Adherence

A. Support: Emphasize the decision-making role of the family, especially the elderly, in healthcare. Hmong people’s culture contributes to the fact that collective decision-making is more important than personal freedom for many of them.

1. Example: The belief systems that people hold about spirits and gods, including the ancestral spirits, influence their decision to accept or reject specific treatments.

2. Example: Shamanism as one of the traditional practices may contribute to people’s hesitance to embrace Western medicine where such practices are adopted inappropriately.

B. Support: Learn about Hmong’s perception of illness, where it is mainly considered a condition of power and spiritual forces; this may affect their compliance with biomedical interventions.

1. Example: An example of a Hmong family that chose traditional health care over the conventional system of health care and hence delayed compliance with medical treatment.

Healthcare Practices and Education

A. Support: Specific culturally embraced practices among the Hmong include use of herbs and spiritual treatment, which may be incongruent with modern medicine.

1. Example: Cultural competence and understanding of Hmong patients’ beliefs about treatments can help in improving the results of the treatments because if the providers respect the cultural beliefs of the patients and incorporate the traditional practices into their treatment plan, the patients are more likely to accept the treatments.

2. Example: Cultural beliefs on balance and harmony may help in treatment adherence if the treatments are explained in the same beliefs.

B. B. Support: There are strategies that can be employed by the providers in order to foster cooperation, such as permitting Hmong families to engage in certain practices, such as bathing a sick member in the hospital.

1. Example: A HC provider ensures the patient understands why medication is taken through a lens of Hmong culture, thus making the patient comfortable to continue taking medication.

Conclusion

A. Restate topic: A detailed cultural analysis of the Hmong culture is relevant in ensuring that the providers of healthcare give the best care possible.

B. Summarize three main points: a positive attitude towards cultural diversity and the ability to respect traditional practices are crucial when it comes to the treatment of Hmong patients.

Revisit the introduction or tie all ideas together: Stress that cultural competence is important in eliminating differences in healthcare and enhancing patient/phy
