Journalism and Publishing in the Digital Age
Assignment: Digital Media Presentation
Due: Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 6 p.m.

Technology is constantly transforming the practice of journalism, creating new ways for
journalists to share news with the public and new channels for consumers to obtain
important information.

For this assignment, you will give a 5-minute presentation to the class on a new media
startup, app or publication that reflects how journalism is changing in the digital age.
The topics have been assigned by the instructor to ensure presentations cover a
diverse range of digital media.

You will need to research your assigned topic and consider how it reflects the changes
happening in journalism and publishing today. You will be expected to provide your own
analysis and assessment as part of the presentation.

Your presentation should contain no more than 5 slides, not including a cover and
citation slide. And it should contain the following information:

● The name of the digital media organization and a description of what it does,
including how it is creating or sharing the news in novel ways in the digital
age.

● An explanation of how your organization makes money (i.e. What is the
business model behind their work?)

● Include at least one example of the digital media organization’s work or
technology. This example should show how it is doing journalism in new and
interesting ways.

● A thoughtful analysis of the digital media organization’s unique approach to
journalism and how it relates to topics we have discussed in class, such as
the role of journalists in society, changing consumer habits, and challenges
facing objectivity, trust, accuracy, etc. in the digital age.

● Formulate a thoughtful opinion based on your research of whether you think
the digital media organization’s approach to journalism is positive or negative
overall from the perspective of a news consumer. .

Please review the below rubric for more detail on how your presentation will be graded.

There will be an opportunity for students to ask questions after each presentation.

A tip from the instructor: Practice your presentation multiple times before you deliver
it to the class. You want to be sure your presentation is not too short or too long, and
that the material is delivered in an engaging way.
