As a future educational leader, working knowledge of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is critical for successful professional practice and ensuring that the organization meets the needs of diverse learners. By knowing what IDEA requires, educational leaders can ensure their policies and practices are legal and ethical and create a supportive environment that offers equitable opportunities and promotes human flourishing for all learners and stakeholders.
Imagine you are in a new leadership position at the organization where you currently work or are most interested in working. You have been asked to create educational materials that provide new employees with a clear understanding of IDEA compliance’s legal and ethical components.
- Using the storyboard application of your choice, develop a story between two or more characters who will illustrate the key story elements in no more than 15 cells/screens, excluding the title and reference cells/screens.
- The factual content should be presented in a conversational way to engage the viewers and teach them about adhering to IDEA legal requirements.
Key content that should be addressed in the storyboard includes the following:
- Include a title for the storyboard.
- Provide an overview of IDEA.
- Illustrate the effects of this law on individuals, parents/guardians, and educational organizations.
- Explain the benefits and limitations of the law.
- Provide three research-based recommendations to assist individuals in your organization adhere to the law.
- Provide three recommendations to assist individuals in your organization in advocating for students and families regarding the law.
- The storyboard should also address the importance of demonstrating personal character and modeling virtuous actions that demonstrate respect for diversity and create a supportive environment that offers equitable opportunities and promotes human flourishing for all learners and stakeholders when applying and adhering to IDEA law.
