1. Cite both articles in
AMA format.
NOTE:
For questions 3-9, answers must include in-text citations.

Hint: Refer to the
Format Requirements for Graded Work section of our D2L page for a breakdown of AMA format/in-text citations, with examples.

0. This question is about etiology. Briefly describe what causes a person to have this condition (e.g. genetics, environment, critical illness, etc.)? What are the risk factors? Limit your response to no more than 125 words.
Hint: Be specific to the condition – AVOID defining common scientific terms like “autosomal recessive.”

0. List the main signs and symptoms associated with this condition. Limit your response to no more than 75 words.

Hint: To avoid being flagged by TurnItIn, don’t copy/paste a list of signs and symptoms. At the bare minimum, you need to change the order of how the terms are listed. You could also re-phrase certain things in plain language (e.g. “vomiting” instead of “emesis”).

0. How is this condition diagnosed (e.g. are there specific criteria/tests/biochemical markers? What results would indicate a person has this condition?)? Limit your response to no more than 150 words.

Hint: State the specific test(s), the normal value/range, and the value/range for a person with this condition.

0. This question is about CLINICAL treatments. Briefly outline the clinical strategies (i.e. medications, therapies, surgery) typically used to treat/manage the condition in adults. Limit your response to no more than 150 words.

Hint: If a medication is used, include the name and/or type of drug and how it’s supposed to help.
Do NOT include information about diet, eating plans, nutritional supplements, meal-related behaviors, exercise, etc. – that info belongs in a different question.

0. This question is about NUTRITION strategies used to treat/manage the condition in adults.
Hint: For parts a, b, and c – answers should be
quantified. Meaning, don’t just say “decrease protein intake” or “eat a high fat diet” – instead, say “limit protein intake to 0.6 g/kg” or “40% of total daily kcals should come from fat.”
Do NOT include information about medications or lifestyle (e.g. weight, exercise) in your answers– that info belongs in a different question.

. ENERGY: Are there any guidelines regarding daily calorie intake? If so, list them here – quantify and be specific. Limit your response to no more than 100 words.

b. MACRONUTRIENTS: Are there any guidelines regarding fat, carbohydrate, protein, or fluid intake? If so, list them here – quantify and be specific. Limit your response to no more than 100 words.

c. MICRONUTRIENTS: Are there any guidelines regarding vitamin or mineral intake (foods and/or supplements)? If so, list them here – quantify and be specific. Limit your response to no more than 100 words.

d. DIET PATTERNS/EATING BEHAVIORS: Are there any guidelines regarding diet patterns (e.g. Mediterranean, DASH) or eating behaviors (e.g. wait 30 minutes after eating before lying down)? If so, briefly describe them in 125 words or less.

0. This question is about LIFESTYLE treatments. Briefly outline the lifestyle recommendations (i.e. exercise, weight loss, smoking, etc.) for treating/managing the condition in adults. Limit your response to no more than 125 words.
Do NOT include information about food/nutrition, supplements, or medications – that info belongs in a different question. Complete sentences not necessary.

From a metabolic perspective, how could having this condition affect a person’s nutritional status? Briefly explain one specific example. Your answer should be at least 50 words, but no more than 125 words.

Hint: This question is asking about disruptions in a nutrition-related metabolic pathway (e.g. insulin resistance, impaired lipid metabolism, etc.), not low dietary intake. For example, if your topic was pernicious anemia, you could discuss how the decreased production of intrinsic factor inhibits the body’s ability to absorb vitamin B12.
