Supporting Materials — how should you use supporting materials to validate or support your main points?

Connectives — identify types of connectives, and explain how you’d use them in your speech.4

Chapter 10

Chapter 15

Appendix-Discussion

This chapter discusses critical details about using language in a speech.  Turn to page 228 and answer questions 3, 4, 5, and 6 under Review Questions.  Identify the question and then provide a BRIEF response.

Read these three speeches in the Appendix at the back of the text:

·
“Ramadan”

·
“The Danger of Cell Phones”

·
“Phony Pharmaceuticals”

Next, discuss what you learned and explain which one impressed you the most and why?

Chapter 16

After you have read the chapter,  explain the types of persuasive speeches that are given as speeches of FACT, speeches of VALUE, and speeches of POLICY.  You will be giving speeches of two of these kinds during the time of the class, a persuasive speech on a question of fact, and a persuasive speech on a question of policy.  Identify a POSSIBLE speech topic that you might develop for each of the three types of persuasive speeches.

Chapter 17

After you have completely and carefully read Chapter 17, post thoughtful and specific responses to the following questions:

When planning your persuasive speeches, how might a speaker build and enhance credibility?

Reflect on the tips for using evidence that are presented in the chapter.

How should evidence and emotional appeals be handled so they are presented in an ethical manner?

Chapter 18

After you have read the chapter completely, post thoughtful and specific responses to the following questions:

1. What are the four kinds of special occasion speeches that are discussed in this chapter, and what is the purpose of each?

2. How will a speaker need to adapt content and style based on the special occasion?

Chapter 20

After reading the last chapter through, write three paragraphs about speaking in groups.

Identify the special issues/concerns involved in speaking in groups in the first paragraph.

In the second paragraph, identify some tips for speaking effectively in groups.

And, finally, in the third paragraph, assume that you are assigned to present to a larger body the recommendations of a small group.  What do you need to think about, and how can you make the presentation effective?
