Course Project: In-Service Training

Overview

Relating course content to current healthcare and health information issues is an integral part of our learning, and it helps students develop a further awareness of how healthcare information management is changing and evolving. For this Course Project, you will develop an in-service education program using PowerPoint and a multimedia tool of your choosing. This presentation is to represent a simulation of a training or in-service that you would present to employees who you are responsible for supervising an HIM department. You will also contact an HIM director in your area to discuss the planning of your presentation and to mentor you through it.

Topic Selection

Week 2: Course Project—Topic Selection (10 points)

The topic area must relate to the HIM department functions and/or services. Some examples of the types of training or in-service you may want to present to employees include, but are not limited to, employee motivation; confidentiality and security of personal health information; teamwork; safety in the work place; communication skills; the electronic health record; quality improvement; insurance issues relating to Medicare, Medicaid, or HMOs; and conflict management.

Read the possible topic choices. Choose your topic and submit to the Week 2 Course Project assignment. Your topic choice will be reviewed, and you will then receive feedback and/or approval of your topic choice.

You do not have to select one of the listed topics. If there is a labor relations topic that you want to investigate and use for this training activity that is not listed, let the instructor know. The appropriateness of the topic will be evaluated against which Course Objective (CO) this training is intended to address. For your convenience, below is a list of possible topics for you to consider. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask. If there is not a topic listed here that you want to research and develop a training program for, contact your instructor so that the appropriateness (CO related, broad enough, etc.) of your topic can be assessed.

1. Employee motivation (CO1)

2. Confidentiality and security of personal health information (CO7)

3. Teamwork (CO2)

4. Safety in the work place (CO6)

5. Communication skills(CO2)

6. Electronic health record (CO5)

7. Quality improvement (CO5)

8. Conflict management (CO6)

9. Survey readiness (CO3)

10. Standardized medical terminology (CO4)

Project Outline

Week 4: Course Project Outline (40 points)

In Week 4, you are required to turn in an outline similar to the format listed below in order to obtain feedback from the instructor on your Course Project content.

Once you begin your research, you will need to create an outline showing how your in-service will be presented. A sample outline is below to help you create your outline. Submit your outline in the Week 4 Dropbox titled Outline. The format for the PowerPoint presentation must include the following, at a minimum.

· Title

· State what the training or in-service is about. Include your name, date, and the class.

· Objectives

· State what you expect the employees to learn from this training or in-service. This should be presented in bullet format.

· Body

· This includes information that you will present to employees to obtain the desired objectives and will include at least two visual aids.

· Conclusion

· This summarizes the most important points made in the training.

· Provide a participant’s post-test.

· This post-test is a means for the participants to demonstrate what they have learned by participating in your in-service training.

· 5-10 multiple-choice questions are required.

Interview/Consultation

Week 6: Interview with HIM Professional (40 points)

Contact a HIM professional to conduct an interview remotely or in person. Prepare questions related to employee orientation and training. Request the policy and procedure related to initial and in-service training. Upload your interview questions and responses in the assignment submission area for Week 6.

Presentation

Week 7: Course Project: In-Service Training Presentation (185 points).

The presentation is to represent a simulation of a training or in-service that you present to employees who you are responsible for supervising in an HIM department. The simulation will be made using the PowerPoint you have developed with the actual training simulated by a multimedia recording. As you prepare for this in-service training, you will contact an HIM director in your area to discuss planning your presentation and mentor you through it.

NOTE: Upload your assignment to the Week 7 Course Project: In-Service Training Presentation
and the Week 8 Course Project: In-Service Training Discussion.
