Submission Instructions:

1. Submit the math how you got to the final conclusion.

2. If your conclusion will not follow the math calculation, no points will be given;

3. Please check your answer and then submit; If it makes sense to you, it will make sense to me.

6. Reminder: This is a graduation level assignment.

Assignment 1: Sample size calculation (One sample, continuous outcome) 10 points

An investigator wants to estimate the mean diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of pregnant women with 95% confidence interval. From the literature review, he/she found that the highest standard deviation (σ) of DBP is 9.70. The investigator decides the margin of error (E) of 3 points.

How many pregnant women should be enrolled in the study?

Assignment 2: Sample size calculation (One sample, dichotomous outcome) 10 points

You want to estimate the proportion of freshmen at your university who currently smoke cigarettes. You want to ensure a 95% confidence interval of the proportion of freshmen who smoke is within 5% of the true proportion. Suppose, you do not have any information on the proportion of freshmen who smoke.

How many freshmen should be involved in the study?

Assignment 3: Sample size determination (Two Samples, Continuous Outcome) 10 points

You have designed a clinical trial to assess the effect of a herbal medicine on obesity measured in body mass index (BMI) > 30. You plan to enroll participants and randomly assign them to receive either the new herbal medicine or a placebo. The effect will be measured in 12 weeks on the assigned treatment. A 95% confidence interval will be estimated to quantify the difference in mean BMI levels between participants taking the new drug and as compared to the placebo. You would like the margin of error to be no more than 2. The manufacturer of the medicine claims that the medicine is effective in reducing obesity and overweight with a standard deviation of 3.5.

How many participants should be required into your study?
