“Nursing Compassion: Beliefs, Values, and Practice”
1.
Introduction
Introduce the purpose of the paper: The rationale for this paper will be to highlight my personal philosophy of nursing that will seek to expound my professional beliefs, values, and attitude in the nursing line of duty.
Share the reason for choosing a career in nursing: I decided to become a nurse based on the passion I had for helping people and the desire to bring about a change in people’s lives. Nursing has given me a chance to give my best to those requiring my services through balancing between the heart and brain.
Explain the nursing paradigm as the framework for the paper: The nursing paradigm of nursing, environment, person, and health forms the framework of this philosophy, explaining how patients and I relate to the healthcare system.
2. Values, beliefs, and attitudes regarding each concept
a. Nursing
Define personal values and beliefs about nursing: Nursing is a center of exercise that comprises several principles such as care, integrity, and advocacy. I think nursing is not only the practice of addressing people’s physical needs but addressing their emotional, mental, and social needs as well. This means that while pursuing their career, nurses have to stand for their patients’ best interests as well as welfare and, at the same time, adhere to top-notch ethical standards.
Discuss attitudes toward the nursing profession: I greatly regard and am devoted to nursing. Nursing involves a learning process and understanding of several aspects, including adaptation, a good virtue every nurse needs to provide good care. The role that I envision the nurse as most important is a critical member of the healthcare delivery team: working and continually consulting with the wider team to spur patient rehabilitation, reduce incidences of disease, and enhance efforts aimed at disseminating information on health management among individuals.
b. Environment
Explain the role of the environment in patient care: What we found was that the surrounding environment that patients undergo directly influences the recovery process they undergo. On the other hand, recovery requires a clean, safe, and nurturing environment that does not cause stress or become a source of stress. The lesson I take away from the story is that I would like nurses to be more pleasant to their patients, to be friendly, and to do all things that will in one way or another make their patients feel relaxed; nurses should therefore try as much as they can to make their wards cheerful (American Nurses Association, 2015).
Share beliefs about how the environment affects health and nursing: The healthcare environment is not limited to the geographical place; it may be the culture, society, or psychological context that a patient is in. Mainly, I focus on the social factors such as family support, availability of health care, and other community factors that determine a patient’s status. These are some of the external forces that nurses have to ponder when trying to eliminate impediments to care as well as enhance the comfort of the patients (Fawcett, J., and DeSanto-Madeya, S. 2012).
c. Person
Define beliefs regarding the person as a holistic entity: Holistically, the person is an individual with physical, emotional, social, and spiritual requirements for his or her well-being. Such a patient is not only a body with signs; such a patient is an individual with many parameters that define his or her health. Every patient has to be respected and valued as a unique person.
Discuss attitudes about individualized care: Of significant importance in nursing as a practice is; Individualized care, which forms the core essence of my philosophy. More specifically, every patient is an individual with individual needs as well as beliefs and preferences, and the nurses have to take this into account (Meleis, A. I. 2021). The principles that I think should be followed include the use of patient participation in care where the patients can voice their values and concerns, as well as the implementation of these values into the care plan.
d. Health
Define health in terms of physical, emotional, and social well-being: It can be defined as a complex, multifaceted state that includes the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions of the individual. This is not only the lack of disease but the achieved state of having formerly unattainable equilibrium in a person’s life. Concerning the nursing practice, I think it is essential for nurses to encourage clients to encompass health, an aspect that covers all of the health aspects.
Discuss how beliefs about health shape your nursing practice: Here, I present my vision of the human body and health, and where, the basis of the treatment starts. I do not only look at the illness and the way of winning the fight but the general well-being of my patients. Thus, paying attention to patients’ emotional and social aspects will also enable me to ensure a patient’s well-being with no recurring diseases.
e. Excellence
Define what excellence means in the nursing profession: Nursing care that is both excellent and competent is competent through producing good quality and proving the nursing care and services in identifying and meeting or even exceeding the expected expectations of each patient. Organizational learning entails a willingness to improve, to the professional growth of an organization, and to executive the highest ethical standards. It is imperative that nurses should at all times uphold safety, show compassion, and also ensure that the correct techniques are employed in caring for the patients.
Discuss personal attitudes toward striving for excellence: In safely speaking, I hold a great passion for nursing practice and strive towards being excellent in all its facets. This entails updating myself on current developments in the field of medicine and enhancing my clinical skills at the same time, seeking promotions when possible. I agree that patients should be giving their best to get better and to help the nursing profession advance in its field.
f. Lifelong Learning:
Lifelong learning is an important aspect to be included in students’ training and development as well as their growth and improvement in their career path.
Explain the importance of lifelong learning in nursing. Education for continuous lifelong learning is important for nurses because of the ever-changing nature of the health care field, be it inventions of new technologies, development of new treatments, or any new research findings. However, in today’s practice environment, to offer optimum nursing care, the nurses have to update their knowledge base and skills. Lifelong learning makes sure that the nurses are always competent and more confident in the way that they practice (Butts, J. B., and Rich, K. L. 2021).
Share personal goals for continuing education and professional development: Some of my learning goals are as follows:
• I will endeavor to acquire higher certifications in my field of practice;
• I will occasionally attend professional conferences in my area of nursing;
• I will ensure that I follow the latest medical research. My greatest desire is to go for my master’s as well as postgraduate studies and engage in continuing education. It will improve my clinical performance and let me take leadership positions that will help me to participate in the improvement of nursing practice.
3. Summary: Practical, Personal Use
Discuss how this personal philosophy will guide your current and future nursing practice: This paper develops my philosophy of nursing that will help me throughout my career by embarking on the framework for guiding me towards performing my duties, interacting with other nurses, and growing as a professional nurse. Hence, to persevere on this path, I will need to retain my values of compassion, and integrity, and focus on patients’ health. This philosophy will also help me to stay professional, and hard-working, attain a high educational level, and become a competent nurse. Further, it will help me to make ethical decisions while caring for clients, making sure that I respect the rights of the individual, embrace healthcare values, and embrace cultural diversity.
