Question:2 :Synthesis Practice Worksheet (paper 2)

Complete this worksheet, upload to BB, and then have ready for class. Take as much space as needed.

Step 1: Take out what you consider to be one of your central sources. Locate and then copy or paraphrase here 1-2 passages/examples that resonate most with your own ideas on the topic. Mention also the source author and page number.

Step 2: Referring now to a different source, locate a passage/example that connects in some specific way to the passage(s) or example(s) you located. Copy/paraphrase the passage here. Mention also the source author and page number.

Step 3: Freewrite here what connections you’re seeing across these texts. What is the relationship between them? Does the passage from the second source support (concur, exemplify), extend (add to), complicate (agree but offers another perspective), and/or challenge (contest or disagree with) the passage from the first source? How so?

Step 4: Freewrite here what these two examples/passages could allow you to illustrate to readers of your essay. Get very specific and elaborate here as much as you can!

Step 5: Freewrite here your own perspectives on the passages. What might you wish to add or emphasize? What stance do you take as compared to the ideas presented by your sources?

Question:3:Sources Handout(paper 2)

For this handout, you are asked to practice the strategies from Writing Analytically: Chp 14. Out of the six strategies, attempt three strategies below by follow the provided prompts. Your answers should range from two to three sentences.

Strategy # 1: Make your sources speak.

For this strategy, choose a quote from one of your sources. Attempt analyzing this quote by breaking down the quote. Then, focus on adding your own insights.

Strategy # 2: Attend carefully to the language of your sources.

For this strategy, use the same quote from before. This time; focus on the specific key terms/ ideologies in the quote. In your own words, explain the key words/ ideologies. Why is it important for someone to know these key terms when understanding your topic?

Strategy # 3: Supply ongoing analysis of sources.

For this strategy, choose a different quote from the same source. Now practice the “so what” of the quote? Ex: what is the importance/ relevancy of the quote?)

Strategy # 4: Use your sources to ask questions.

For this strategy, think about what questions are connected to your quote. Try to frame questions that can help you analyze your quote. For this prompt, use a new source.

Strategy # 5: Put sources in conversation.

For this strategy, use both sources previously used. Attempt analysis by making a connection between the sources. How do the sources work together?

Strategy # 6: Find your own role in the conversation.

For this strategy, think about the two options presented in the chapter. Attempt a analysis following one of the options.

Option # 1: apply it in another context to qualify or expand on its implications.

Option # 2: Seek out other perspectives on the source to break the spell it has cast on you.

Question 4: ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY GUIDELINESFind EIGHT to TEN peer-reviewed, scholarly articles that you plan to use for your research project. Youwill need to find these sources through the library databases. Annotate at least EIGHT of the sources byfollowing these guidelines:1) Your annotated bibliography should be listed in alphabetical order (of the author’s last name), andeach entry should begin with a complete citation using APA guidelines. For all eight entries, you’ll needto write an annotation.2) The annotation appears directly under the citation and it consists of a paragraph (approx. six to sevensentences) containing:a) A brief summary of what this source is about written entirely in YOUR OWN words;b) A description of why you think this source could be useful. Explain specifically how the key ideasand/or information in the source can help you answer your research question. Please leave a spacebetween the citation and annotation (see example below), and do not use quoted sentences in yourentries.
