This assessment directs you to analyze the uses for health data with the purpose of improving health care policies and operations. Raw data doesn’t say much to most people, but through data analysis, information can be extracted and used to “tell the story” of a particular patient population.
Select or generate a dataset that is meaningful to you and your interests in the health care industry by using one of the links below:
- CDC WONDER Online Databases
- HealthData.gov/Datasets
Evaluate the dataset and determine how valuable it is for improving health care operations or policies. This will require the creation of a chart or graph to interpret the data.
Write a 1,400- to 1,750-word report with your evaluation of the dataset and what value can be gained from it. Include the following:
- The source of the data
- Why the data is important
- A detailed chart or graph to interpret the data
- What trends the data documents
- What changes in operations or policies can be made to improve quality or efficiency
Cite 3 reputable references to support your report (e.g., trade or industry publications, government or agency websites, scholarly works, or other sources of similar quality).
the idea is to find a data set that interests you, and answer all parts. But I’m not “married” to these sites, and I will accept any data set you want to use. If you find a better dataset to download and use, GREAT! Example, the U. S. Department of Health & Human Services publishes reports with datasets would work. Or search Google or use some dataset from your work. (more examples below)
I would like each student to simply find a dataset and write a paper using the guidelines within the rubric. Include your analysis, graph, and the rest of the rubric requirements. The goal is to demonstrate you can take a dataset, (raw data), and analyze it and put that into a report. This is what is required in “real life”, and this is one of the key goals for this project.
I found this site which might be helpful, but if you Google the phrase “healthcare dataset csv download”, you can find all sorts of datasets.

To make it easier, just select data from one year, one state, or choose some other limit to make the dataset size manageable. Then perform your analysis.
