according to lago, Bianca is a ‘housewife’ (pronounced ‘huzif) or hussy who sells her ‘desires’ to earn a living. He goes on to make his meaning even clearer by calling her a ‘strumpet (a whore). Many editors of the play assume Bianca is a prostitute, and call her that in the list of characters at the beginning of the playscript. How accurate is lago as a judge of women? Can we take his description at face value? Consider lago’s attitude toward women. How different would the play be if we knew for certain that Bianca was indeed a prostitute? Consider how it reflects on Cassio, and what the general image of women would be if Bianca represents one third of the women in the cast. Show less
