After reviewing the information in the Geologic Maps Lab Presentation, follow the steps provided to complete a Simplified Geologic Map. This lab is best done with colored pencils, colored markers, or crayons. If you don’t have those, you can use patterns instead of colors. Patterns take much more time to complete so it is in your best interest to find colored drawing instruments.
Supplies Needed
- The field notes with data from field stations
- The geologic map worksheet with base map of field stations
- A black pen or pencil (Don’t use a blue pen.)
- Colored pencils, colored markers, or crayons (If you don’t have these you can use patterns instead.)
- A straight edge (optional, but helpful for drawing the fault)
Follow the steps below to complete your geologic map using the base map provided.
Lab Steps
- Transfer the rock unit data from the station data in Table 2 of your field notes to the base map by coloring each station with appropriate rock unit color or pattern (listed in Table 1). Just color over each dot with the appropriate color or pattern.
- Find and draw the fault on your map using a red pen or pencil. A bit on the thick side is fine. If you don’t have a red pencil or pen, use a thick black line.
- Draw in the contacts between the different rock units. The contacts stop at the fault! This is much like drawing topographical lines; just run the contact line between the two different colors.
- Shade in the rock units on your map with the appropriate color or pattern. Refer to slide 5 of the PowerPoint presentation. The entire area is shaded in the appropriate color or pattern, not just the dots.
- Add the six essential parts of the map using the information provided below.
- Title: use A Geologic Map of a Portion of Valdosta, Georgia
- Location: use Valdosta, GA
- Date: use the semester (Spring, Summer, or Fall) and year you are taking this course. Example, Spring 2020
- North arrow
- Scale at the bottom: use 5 miles
- Explanation (Key) with colored or patterned boxes and unit names
