Dealing with Tough APRN-Focused Interview Questions

Job interviews are always stressful, and preparation helps boost your self-esteem and consequently your prospects in securing the job you are interviewed for. You have had several, if not many, job interview experiences so far in your lives. Nonetheless, in this activity, you will practice responding to some tough APRN-focused interview questions. A list of questions is provided. Review them and
post a video response to one of the tough interview questions provided below.

To warm up and start preparing for this interview activity, let’s watch this video on body language, something that we think about and are conscious of during job interviews:

Interview Questions

Choose one of the tough interview questions from the list to post a one to two minute video on how you would answer that question.

1. What would you do if you disagreed with the care provided by your overseeing physician? Have you ever been in disagreement with a physician over the diagnosis or treatment of a patient? How did you handle the situation?

2. How will you respond when a patient tells you they cannot afford the treatments you are suggesting they need?

3. What will you do if a patient is yelling at you in your office because of any of the following? (Select one and respond):

· You will not order a test they want to have done.

· They are not responding positively to pain medication and request more than the allowable amount.

· They ask you to refill one of their medications that was originally prescribed by another provider.

· They request unnecessary antibiotics.

4. Let’s assume that you are caring for a female patient. It is your understanding that she comes from a culture wherein a patient’s husband often speaks for the patient regarding all care. During a visit, how do you address the patient? What would you do if the patient does not speak at all? What if consent is needed for a procedure and the patient fails to show typical patterns of behavior demonstrating her knowledge and consent?

5. Tell us about a time when you witnessed unethical behavior at your work as a nurse. How did you respond?
