Discussion Board Painting & Drawing [Initial post due Wednesday, two responses to your peers are due on Sunday]
For this discussion board, you have a choice!
Pick one of the two options below.
Option 1: Creative Process Option
When artists are drawing, they use a variety of methods to suggest shaded and light areas. For this discussion board, I’d like you to experiment with some of the drawing techniques explained in the chapter. Don’t worry about whether your work is “good” or “bad”. This is an opportunity for you to experiment with materials and techniques. Students in the past have found this exercise therapeutic.
1. Review the chapter to see how artists suggest shaded and light areas in drawing. Some of these methods include cross-hatching, varying the weight of the pencil, charcoal, or pen. When using wet media (like ink), artists add an increasing amount of water to suggest lighter areas.
2. Study the images in the textbook. Figure out what each artist did to suggest dark and light areas.
3. Pick a method you’d like to try.
4. Assemble your materials. Regular pencils and pens are fine! If you have charcoal, pastels, India ink or other artist drawing tools, you are welcome to use them.
5. Spend 20 minutes making a small drawing using that technique (cross-hatching, rendering, etc). It can be something from your imagination or a drawing of something you see in front of you (like a cup or a piece of food).
Be sure to use one of the methods in the text to suggest dark and light areas!
6. Attach your image to your post. (You will probably not be able to embed this one)
7. In a few sentences, describe your process. What was challenging? What was easy? Did you enjoy the process of drawing? Why or why not?
Do not state which method you chose.
Option 2: Video research option
1. Find an interesting and relevant 3-15 minute video (or two) that shows a painting or drawing technique that is interesting to you.
Some good sources for videos include
· YouTube: www.youtube.com
· ART21 (
www.pbs.org/art21/Links to an external site.).
Look for demonstrations of techniques and methods that are mentioned in the drawing and painting chapters.
We’ve all seen Bob Ross, so choose another aritst!
2. In your post:
· put the link to the video (make it a hyperlink so that readers just have to click on it)
· In 6-10 sentences, answer the following questions:
· Why did you choose this video?
· What is interesting to you about this technique?
· What do you think about this artist’s work? Why?
· How is watching a video about an art technique different from reading about it in the textbook?
4. For your responses. (You can respond to any posts, regardless of which option you chose)
·
Responses for Creative option: Which method to show shaded and light areas do you think this artist chose? Write a couple of sentences about the use of line or application of line, shape, or another element.
·
Responses for video option: Find a video you found interesting among your classmates’ posts. In each response, state why you found that technique and/or artist’s work interesting.
