Assignment Details

This assignment  is worth 10% of the final grade.  Students will design and submit a word cloud image that:

  • Clearly displays the student’s chosen community through word choice and word cloud shape.
  • Represents the many factors (both negative and positive) that the student believes contribute to their community’s resilience.

The following image provides an example of a student word cloud, which describes the Sikh community (shared with permission)

Notable features within this example:

  • The chosen community is clearly identified within the word cloud.
  • The word cloud is intentionally designed, incorporating at least one symbol or design feature in a way that its design represents the chosen community.
  • At least 20 positive and 20 negative resiliency factors are identified within the word cloud.
  • Positive and negative resiliency factors (as identified by the student) are clearly differentiated by the use of colour or design.

Step 1:  Identify a specific community (which you identify with)

To successfully complete Assignment #2, students need to first choose a specific community that they would like to represent with their word cloud.  This can be any group they feel part of or identify with.

Examples of communities include:

  • Local neighbourhoods, “home towns”, specific regions of Canada or the world
  • Sports teams or fan groups
  • Gaming communities or hobby groups
  • Business, work, and specific occupational groups
  • Cultural, religious, and other social affiliations
  • Parenting or family roles
  • University or college affiliations
  • Civic groups and classifications (e.g., refugees, international students, etc.)

Step 2:  Identify positive and negative factors that affect your community’s resilience

After students have chosen a community for their word cloud, they must identify positive and negative factors (at least 20 factors each) that affect their community’s resilience.  Additional information on community resilience factors is available within Module #3 for this course.

Step 3:  Design a visually representative word cloud image

Students will use information from Steps #1 and 2 to create a word cloud image.  Any software program or image design tool can be used to generate a word cloud.

Some word cloud generators include:

  • Wordclouds.comLinks to an external site.  (Recommended option; free)
  • Word ArtLinks to an external site.  (more visually appealing / artistic options)

How will I be graded on this assignment?

Up to 10 points will be awarded for Assignment #2 based on the following marking rubric – attached below.  Please review the marking rubric before completing this assignment, as it will be used to grade your word cloud submission.
