Part 1: Read Chapter 3 & 4 in Buried Talents
Write a two-page reflective paper summarizing your thoughts after reading these two chapters. It should be evident that you are commenting on the chapters, but do not simply summarize or paraphrase the book.
Part 2: Think about yourself as a tree. Label the different parts of the tree in relation to your self. Give enough detail for me to fully understand how the examples you provide characterize the different parts of the tree.

The Trucks : Describe 2 examples of strong influences that have helped shape the person you are now. Be specific and descriptive

The Limbs : Describe 2 groups with which you identify. How are these groups an important part of your life and how do they add to your life?

The Leaves: What are 2 main sources of your energy. Explain how they energize you?

The Fruits: Discuss 2 accomplishments of your life

The Buds: Identify one hope or dream within 6 months, 5 years, and 10 years
Read Buried Talents by Susan Howell–Reflecting on Chapters 1 & 2
Discuss how children are socialized into gender roles through parents, toys, school, the media, etc. What are your thoughts on gender socialization? Do you agree with Dr. Howell’s thoughts? If so what in specific resonates with you? If not, with what do you disagree?
What is your earliest memory of boys and girls receiving different treatment? What messages did you take away from those experiences?
What toys were you encouraged to play with as a child? How did that influence your interests or perception of your abilities?
Please refer to the grading grid for forum questions to earn maximum points. Postings are due by midnight the due date and responses are due by midnight on the following day. You will need to respond to at least one classmates.
APPLICATION QUESTIONS:
1. Define and compare and contrast an independent variable and a dependent variable (in the context of an experiment). Describe an example of an experiment, using what the text defines as an experiment. Be sure to clearly identify the independent and dependent variables in your example.
2. Compare and contrast an experiment and a correlational study.

GRADING RUBRIC:
For EACH CHAPTER (some modules/weeks have 2 chapters), there have been two application questions posted. Please answer each question thoroughly and with evidence that you have completely read the chapter BEFORE answering the question. Each answer should be 6-12 sentences and 75-120 words and written in correct grammar and sentence structure. 1 point will be taken off for grammar and sentence structure errors.
Read the chapters BEFORE answering the questions. Answers should integrate accurate information from the textbook with your opinions and experience. If you use an outside source (not necessary), please completely site the source.
Late assignments will lose 1 point for every day that it is late, for 7 days, after which it will be a zero.
Your application questions should be submitted on the Moodle website as a Word or PDF Document and
should be labelled: LastName_FirstInitial_Applcation QuestionsCH#_ Semester.
Grading Rubric: Application Questions Assignments will be based on these criteria
:
1. Each answer should be 6-12 sentences and 75-120 words. If you are struggling to write that much, read the chapter again and find more text support of your answer. (3 points)
2. Answers should have accurate information, found in the textbook material— the answer will show that a student has fully read the chapter. (3 points)
3. Answers should integrate personal experience, your opinion, culture, etc into the textbook material, but not only include experience and opinion. (2 points)
4. Answers should be written in proper grammar, sentence/paragraph structure, proper paper formatting. (1 point)
5. Answers should be original and unique, your own thoughts- NOT copied directly from the text or other students. *If you use an outside source (not necessary), please
completely site the source. (1 point)
